I lived at the Legends while building our home. It's a gated complex at the entrance to the Charleston National subdivision/golf course. It's right across the street from Publix and just around the corner from Walmart and other shopping areas. The one bedroom I was in was ok.. not real big. The people there were ok.. never had issues with any neighbors. The office was always real responsive.
The drive to the VA time wise will depend on when you're driving, but shouldn't take more than 40 mins during dead on rush hour. It normally takes me around 35 mins traveling a moderate rush hour. Make your appointments mid morning and you'll cruise in at around 20 mins or so.
Based on what you're stating, it sounds like I'd prefer Ingleside, with everything on one level. I try to avoid stairs when possible. thanks!
Yeah, definitely. Ingleside has 3 floors, but living in an apartment on the 2nd floor is still a lot easier than living in one that has 2 floors. At least you only have to climb the steps in and out of your residence a few times a day... glad that helps.
I did have Abberly at West Ashley on my list at one point, but I was getting the feeling it was perhaps too trendy or hip for my aged, "you-kids-get off-my-lawn" social graces (kidding!). But I'll take a second look. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks, for decent neighborhood, quiet and security. I believe Abberly has available garages, which is what I'm looking for. Thanks!
So I actually ended up at Abberly, and that was kind of the vibe I got when I was looking, but it hasn't been the case at all. There's a nice mix of age and lifestyle groups here - it probably trends younger, but there are plenty of retired folks and some families too. The only thing I'd watch out for is getting an apartment that faces the freeway. I only saw a model before moving in, so when I got here I was surprised to be placed in a unit that faces the freeway. I thought this was gonna be a big deal because the noise can be heard from the unit...but after a week I didn't even notice it anymore. Anyway, something to keep in mind if that's a big deal to you.
When I finally get to retire in Charleston, I will probably be using the VA Hospital a lot more than I do now. Have you heard any reviews on the one in Charleston after the the issues the VA system had earlier in the year? The VA hospital I go to is absolutely wonderful.

While I haven't been a patient at the Charleston VA yet, I did take a look around the grounds, and did what research about them on line as I could. I couldn't find any major complaints or issues. I got the impression that they were more "pro vet" than some of the other VA's I've been seen at. Overall, I expect there'll be some growing pains as I get absorbed into their system, but no really insurmountable problems. Good luck!

My dad's been a patient there and we've had no problems. He likes it better than the Columbia one.
That's what happens here too. They come to one in Columbia rather than the ones in St. Louis or Kansas City.
