I just visited your wonderful city and absolutely loved it, even with the high humidity and the Labor Day weekend crowds. I want to be there now, but alas, I have 11 more years to wait. I've been contemplating retiring in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina (but leaning towards Charleston) for some time now because of the tax advantages for the over 65 crowd, the way of life and of course the warmer weather winter weather.
As you can see by my userid, I have a way to go before I will be able to retire. For now I will be reading through all of the threads and watching for articles about retiring in the greater Charleston area.
Right now I'm checking out the apartments from the information I picked up while I was there and reading the forum to get an to get an idea as to how much I'll need for rent, utilities, taxes etc. I am leaning more towards the gated and more upscale apartment complexes in Mt. Pleasant/Charleston and maybe Summerville if I can't afford the first two. Do any of you any idea as to how much and/or how often rent goes up? It's been awhile since I've lived in an apartment.
As a rough estimate I was thinking of figuring in the average inflation rate for the last decade - 2.2% and times it by 11 years. Does that sound about right? I look forward to reading all the helpful information you all provide. Thanks for your help.
I originally was thinking of Summerville because it was smaller sized and the same distance to Charleston as what I drive to work every day. But after visiting the Charleston area I've realized that it wouldn't be as bad as I originally thought it would be. Summerville is still a very viable choice. I am collecting information on both cities. Sorry if I offended you.
In the 2 years I've lived here... rent has skyrocketed at the complexes where we looked around when moving down as well as the one we lived in (it's one reason why we bought a home). I've had several friends who've moved from their rentals off Bees Ferry Rd. to other cheaper rentals due to increases, as well as a few others who see increasing rent as a sign to buy a home. Still, I think it's a good idea to rent when you move here, like we did. It helped us find where in the area we really wanted to live and didn't tie us down in case anything fell through with a job, etc.
I have to apologize -- I read 'red headed' stepchild as redneck....but that's just as bad isn't it? Merci Beaucoup Joyeaux.
As far as idioms go, they're pretty much disparate.
I guess the two might diverge occasionally, though.
