Before I go to the obvious places like Staples or Best Buy, are there other options around the area that would be just as good for less?
I have a laptop where some of the letters i.e., c, v, x, m won't type. I googled the issue and evidently it's pretty common for just those letters to stop. I did a system restore and reinstalled drivers but nothing works so I'm thinking I need a new keyboard. No crumbs can get in between keys because they fit tight next to each other.
In order to still use the laptop, I had to hook a keyboard via USB to it.
Laptop keyboard replacement can be (but not always) a very easy task. The older and bigger the laptop, usually the easier it is to replace the keyboard. Look online with your name and model number. You may find a U tube video showing how to do it.
Usually there is a plastic plate above the keyboard that will snap off with some gentle prying. Then there will be a few screws along the top of the key pad and maybe on the bottom. Once screws are removed the keyboard can be lifted up. There will the be a cable (flat this wire about 1in wide) running from the keyboard to a plug.

Again, usually a fairly easy task.
Thanks. I actually did find a youtube and already took the keyboard off to make sure the ribbon was connected correctly before ordering a new one off of Ebay. The new keyboard cost about 22.00 and I'll install free so that probably saved me a bunch of money. Staples or Best Buy would have charged an arm and a leg....gotta love youtube.
Hope it works out for you. Once done, let us know.
If you want to do a service to all then call Best Buy, Staples, BBS, etc. and ask their charge for replacing the keyboard, parts and labor and be specific on the model machine.
The best answer will be $XXX$ but we cannot guarantee this will solve your problem. We are simply quoting on the task you asked us to perform. Any other answer is a "dance".
Well I ordered the keyboard from Amazon for 16.25. It should get here by Wednesday. I'll let you know if it works.
All you basically do is take the keyboard off, look on the back of the keyboard to see the ribbon and unhook the ribbon after loosening the 2 sides from where it connects to the laptop. Then replace it with the new ribbon, tighten back the 2 sides and wahlah. I'm hoping it's that easy anyhow. I would think Staples or Best Buy would have charged about 50.00 for labor plus cost of a new keyboard which would probably be another 50.00.
Thanks meks for the rec. I'll keep that info on hand.
