The home is part of the old officer's quarters on the old Navy base. Google Noisette for more info on that area.
On School of the Arts - my son has been at the school for 2-1/2 years and we've never had a problem with crime in the area. There is a lot of development going on in this part of North Charleston - even adjacent to the school where Brentwood Homes and Centex Homes are building. There is also spot development in other areas around Park Circle heading into the old North Charleston business district on East Montague where my son trains and participates in theatre productions at South of Broad Theatre Company and you can run into Mayor Summey at the corner coffee shop and cafe. They do art shows in that area too. Are there poor people in the area? Yes! Is there some crime - Yes! Have we ever had a problem during the day or after dark? No! They even filmed a good bit of the Army Wives Lifetime Television show on the old Navy Base and in the Park Circle area and those folks frequented the restaurants in the area. The Park Circle area has a fair number of older retired Navy people who used to work at the base and some young professionals and artists. The best source of info on crime is the local police department. Call them and ask about the good vs. bad areas. Some of the "poorer" areas have very strong communities where everyone knows everyone and keeps an eye out -- better than some of the other suburban areas. |

What makes N. Chas so bad is its leaders' refusal to acknowledge the problem. When the city was recently voted 4th most dangerous in the country, all the mayor said was that "the data left out important factors." This city won't revitalize until everyone acknowledges what a slum it's become.
Try some areas of Hanahan. It's relatively inexpensive (in parts) and a lot safer than N. Chas. As a bonus, the schools are better too. |
