I currently live in the Greenville,SC area. I;m just divorced and now looking for a full-time job. I cannot find anything in the upstate. The Charleston area has a lot of jobs in my field. I know that Summerville would be a great place for young children. But, how long is the commute to downtown Charleston from Summerville? Also, do the elementary schools in Dorchester Two have any after-school care (i.e. YMCA, etc.)?
The commute would depend on the time you would need to be in downtown Charleston and where you end up purchasing/renting a place. If you are closer to I-26 and get on the interstate between 6:15-8:00 to 8:30 if will take you 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to work at this time. The reason I said "at this time" is because once the developments get built around Cane Bay it will probably take longer. If you live closer to Hwy 61 you could take that way and it might knock down some of the time. Hwy 61 is only a two lane road.
Here's some info on the before and after school programs.

I'm thinking that there are some other questions to be answered before the 'commute time' comes into question.
What do you do?
How big a family?
Rent before buying? (I think this may be a good idea if you don't know the area).
How much a month?
How important is the school district?
Were you married to Donald Trump?
Love the last question!! I wish I had been married to Trump, but only if I could keep my eyes closed!
I am a paralegal. But I do have a college degree so I am also looking in other fields.
I have 2 elementary-aged boys.
I was thinking of renting before buying. Just because I need to sell my house here in Greenville before buying another.
How much a month, depends on what I can get for my money down there. I don't want to go over about $1,300. I need a fenced yard (I have dogs), The school district is extemely important to me. Excellent schools are a must. It is my understanding that Dorchester Two is the best. Am I right on that?
That is not a problem at all for either a nice townhome or single family home under $1300. I came up with over 30 choices with fencing on a 3bed/2bath option.
I would rent until you sell in Greenville.
You can't go wrong with the Dor II schools for the kids.

Jim since I'm not a real estate agent none of those things matter to me.
I lived in Greenville for 5 years and just returned to Summerville 2 years ago. I grew up in Charleston and know the area very well. We chose to move to the Summerville area because of the great schools. I have one child in elementary school and one in middle school. I have been very pleased with Dorchester County II schools. You can also buy more house for your money in the Summerville area as compared to Mt. Pleasant and James Island. The commute to downtown is about 30 minutes. In rush hour traffic it will take 45 minutes to an hour. There are a lot of attorney offices in the Summerville area. I would suggest sending them your resume so you would not have to commute downtown. My kids are involved in dance and sports and love Summerville. Most of the schools have after school care available. The YMCA also has after school care. Also it is a buyers market here so now if definitely a great time to buy a house. You can get a nice home in a descent neighborhood for under $200,000. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can be of any help.
