Hi dpare. I moved down from Massachusetts about 2 years ago. You guys are gonna love it here. KEB has some great suggestions with areas. My wife and I live in Mt Pleasant and love it. We own and chose the area due to the proximity to the beach and downtown and it's central for both our jobs. However, if we were renting for a bit, we would definitely be in downtown Charleston. I like the walkability and everything it has to offer down there. Mt. Pleasant has a lot of sprawl with lots of new developments and a lot of subdivisions. For renting in Mt. P, Coleman Blvd would be an area I would look into as it has a pretty good scene. You'll find that walkability there too. West Ashley is a little older but you'll like it there. Parts of it remind me of Allston, but not in a bad way. And KEB was also right on the salaries....expect to take a rather large pay cut. Property taxes are crazy cheap though so when you do buy the lesser salary won't hurt as much.

That sounds awesome. Coming from Massachusetts, what are three things you miss most about Massachusetts and three things you love most about the Charleston area?

The summer heat and humidity combo here is much more intense than it was in MA. This really has been the hardest adjustment for our family. Our kids used to play outside all summer long in MA, but down here, it is really too hot to play outside during the day, so they tend to wait until the late afternoons to play outside. If we could have a New England summer and fall season, followed by a Charleston winter and spring season, that would be just about perfect in my book:-)

Mainly because the heat and humidity are for limited periods of time in Boston summers. Also I miss go to Fenway several times over the summer to watch the Red Sox play.

Two different things, the summers here and in MA. Of course, the same can be said for the winters. I lived up in Gloucester MA for a while and nobody used the word "oppressive" to describe the summers there.

That would be nice. Spending time in the mountains around Asheville is the poor man's fix.

Yeah, the summers are hot and humid, but I love it. Everything has central air if you need an escape. I love walking out of the central air at night and hitting that wall of heat and humidity. As for the three things I miss about Mass and love about Charleston.

Miss:

1) Good ethnic food is tough to find.
2) Sub shops. All they seem to have is Subways and Firehouse and a few other chains. I loved locally owned ones with great pizza and subs. I'm still looking for a great pizza place.
3) Boston at Christmas. I'm just used to the cold and potential for snow. It feels weird when I'm buying a Christmas tree in shorts.

I agree with Pattig on her four too. Loved Fenway on a summer night, lobster is tough to find, summers on the cape are tough to beat, and nothing compares to the North End in my opinion. Loved that place. But back to the lobster, I haven't tried it but 167 Raw on East Bay has a lobster roll and those guys are from Nantucket, and there is also this food truck starting up soon: http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/E...wn-this-spring

Love about Charleston:

1) Being able to use the beach from March to December. May to October is my favorite though and the only time I go swimming because the water is still warm. Beach water will get up to 80 around here. It's awesome. The sand is different than the cape though. It's a little more compact. You'll get used to it and I like it better. It's great for runs or walks or playing bocce or whatever.
2) All the great food everywhere. Yeah, ethnic and sub shops are few and far between, but there are tons of good options everywhere. There always seems to be something new opening up. Some places can get expensive though.
3) The beauty of the area. It's incredible down here.

And one other thing that's good is that it seems like 75% of the people I meet in the Charleston area are transplants. That makes it easier to meet people in my opinion. If you're active there are all sorts of meet ups and brew runs and not to mention festivals where you'll be able to mingle and make new friends.

I could go on with my things I miss and love, but the move will be what you make of it. I've never regretted it once and I love it here.
