Our 25th anniversary is next May, so thinking ahead to plan a get-away.
Originally were going to go to Europe, but seeing as we just moved, and with a dog and all, we don't want to leave her too long or spend what Europe will cost.
We may very well just spend a few nights in downtown Charleston, but thinking of spending a few nights somewhere drivable from here instead.
We don't want anything built up like Myrtle Beach, and want a coastal town with some shops, restaurants, and nice beaches,
Destinations that have been recommended to us are St. Simons Island, GA, Amelia Island, FL, and Beaufort, SC.
Anyone have comments on those 3 or other recommendations?
Funny, when I read the title, I thought of St. Simons
It has a special place in my heart because we lived there for a couple of years in the early 90's. When we head down to Florida, occasionally we swerve over to the Island just to see how it is looking these days.
St Simons is gorgeous with the HUGE oaks covered in moss. Also you will see how massive pines can be when they don't have to put up with the occasional hurricane. Because Georgia is 'tucked in' on the coast they haven't gotten more than a brush in something like 100 years.
Almost the entire island has a bike path, one thing that I missed terribly when we returned to this area. If you like history, Fort Frederica, a Spanish fort, makes for an interesting diversion. Right before the fort is perhaps one of the most beautiful little churches in the country, Christ Church, with an amazing graveyard of early colonial settlers. It is open to tourists.
The center of the town is what the locals call 'The Pier or The Village'. There you will find the touristy stuff. It has a pier that faces the neighboring island, Jekyll. Most of the activity is here, with shops, bars, restaurants, and crafters. Next to it is a public park, Neptune Park. On the other side of the regional airport is Red Fern Village, with even more shopping and dining, along with some art galleries.
Down the road a bit is the beach area. You can walk for miles at low tide, something I loved. The King and Prince Hotel and resort is on the beach area and has been there for years.
It is a little less than a three hour drive from where I live in Summervile.
St Simons has several tourist sites for all the info you will need.
