Default West Ashley

My husband and I are looking at houses in the West Ashley area, specifically the Moreland neighborhood...right across the bridge. Any thoughts about that area--good/bad?

thanks!

Moreland, Byrne's Down, Windermere, and parts of Avondale are fantastic areas of the lowcountry. Prices tend to be a bit higher because you're paying the premium for being SO close to downtown (we're talking less than 5 minutes drive to work and play!), but there are some fantastic properties in that area.

Couldn't recommend them much higher.

DJShymansky is correct. That's a great location.

It IS a great location, but I feel you can get a lot more for just five minutes down the road.

Moreland is basically small brick homes (which I really like), that are VERY difficult to retrofit from a 3bed/1 bath setup.

Great for a professional couple, but a bit overpriced in my opinion.

I have read some comments that parts of West Ashley are dangerous areas with regard to crime. Can anyone tell me what parts specifically to stay away from?

Also, we're looking in the Providence Commons area and the area around West Ashley Park. Is that safe? And what about the schools there? Specifically, the elementary and middle schools. I believe the schools would be Springfield Elementary and West Ashley Middle School.

Thank you for any information.

Providence Commons is nice and quiet, you shouldn't have much to worry about there. Still as with any area you live in, always be responsible. You won't believe how many -great- neighborhoods have overnight thefts because homeowners are too complacent to do things like lock their cars, remove personal belongings from vehicles overnight, shut garage doors, etc. Just stay smart, and you'll be fine just about anywhere.

There are a number of police officers I used to work with in West Ashley that live in Providence Commons, and it's definitely not on my "neighborhoods to avoid" list.
