Hi & hope you all are planning a great weekend! I live in Summerville, but I am < 8 miles from Middleton Plantation. One thing I dislike is all of the BUILDING at this time, yet NO INFRASTRUCTURE to handle the increase in population! Who is going to pay for the new schools we're going to have to build? What about the highways? When they made Dorchester Road 4 lanes instead of the 2, why didn't they go ahead & make Dorchester Rd. 8 lanes?? I, personally, kinda am use to the Palmetto bugs (the huge "roaches"). You aren't suppose to kill them with Roach spray...the directions on the back of the can are wrong! It should read "Take can in your hand & kill them! They're fun to kill, just make sure you pop their head off because I've heard they can still live ~1 week without it!? "The Girls" I have now are just "Pampered Posh Pusses" they aren't interested in them....they would rather be within eyesight of their "Mommy" instead of flipping them over so they can't move. My previous cats loved to flip them! I may have named more than 5, but I DO LOVE THIS AREA! I love my home & feel safe here! I have an 11 y/o Honda CR-V and it just flipped over to 59,000 miles! Ya have to love that! Everything is so convenient. I drive from point A-A1/2 according to the friendly young man who changed my oil. On 1 Christmas Day, I went into a store which was open. I saw people in shorts & jackflaps! Go figure? It was extremely warm that day. On the other hand, I can't deal with the "sticky, HUMID" heat we have more times than not! BUT, I still love it here, anywhere but where I grew up!!! PS:If you ever met my Momster, you would know why!!

I agree with the locals there. Im not from there. Im from VA and where I live was a smaller community til out of towners came down here and changed it here. tearing down woodlands to build neighborhoods. building buildings and what not. Its just not the same and they have the nerve to complain about the issues with it.

1. Flooding downtown when it rains for more than a few hours. If it also happens to be high tide, it's a nightmare. Major streets downtown are actually closed because the water gets so deep. I don't understand why this is still an issue, in 2009.
2. The smell (I've been told it's something called "pluff mud"). It seems to happen anywhere from once a week to a few times a week. I don't know what causes it, but it stinks. I don't think it's quite the same as a paper mill smell, but it's close.
3. Development restrictions on the peninsula. I realize that Charleston is a very historic city, and that should be protected - especially since that is a big reason why Charleston is such a tourist destination. But I feel that the unfortunate flip side to that is that many beneficial projects for the peninsula are refused because it involves a historic structure. A little balance would be nice.
4. Sprawl. This isn't unique to Charleston, but it's still something that needs to be addressed.
5. Attitude. I feel that there is an arrogance in Charleston by some of the longtime residents that is unjustified. It's a fine city, but Charleston is not the center of the world, folks. There are other great cities out there, and there is nothing wrong with acknowledging them.

It floods downtown on a big hightide without the rain, the rain only makes it worse....

This is suppose to be the south…. home of nice folks, and southern hospitality. Charleston has among the most stuck up/arrogant people, I’ve dealt with in the states.
The smell o god the smell… One of the worst odors known to man.
The roads are in pretty bad shape, causing numerous unneeded repairs.
Bugs, never seen so many in my life… I know its due to the local environment. But its just never ending….
The weather…
Lack of a good metro system
Lack of options of Airlines/Destinations at the airport.

You guys think its really that bad there. You should be greatful that people from other places want to move to your beautiful city. It is a great area and I think that it will never lose that "Southern Charm" I love it here. Just moved here a few days ago.
Think about it. We are really just all "transplants" from somewhere else. People love it and decide to move there. Look at Los Angeles for instance. I just came from there and loved it but hated it at the same time. The weather was great, beaches were great, people sucked and were very rude and all about themselves. And traffic, I really dont want to hear about traffic. There is always traffic in La at any givin time no matter what day it is. And because of us "transplants" housing values are going up, economy is getting better etc...
Sorry just wanted to chime in on this subject

Only thing I dislike are all the people hellbent on blaming all their problems on transplants. My wife is from the north, and has lived in the south for 7 years, and ironically she always complains about how rude so many of the people in the south are. Just goes to show that while we all might think our own farts don't stink, they are all made the same way.
