One of my dislikes was no Giants games unless they NEED to play them.
The "establishment" I was in downtown for the game had a pretty good balance of fans on both sides. Although, the Giants fans were much more vocal (go figure). I did see an interesting thing though.
A college girl (20yo?) saw a homeless guy outside. Brought him in, sat him at the bar, bought him a burger & a beer, walked away.
Pretty impressive for a Giants fan, although I kind of questioned the beer decision.

I was shocked to find that in addition to paying for plates for our vehicles here, they charge a "property tax" on your cars?!?
You pay taxes on the money you spend to purchase the car, then you pay state/local sales tax on the car, then you have to pay property tax on the car each and every year you own it??? What kind of crap is that??
<steps off soapbox>
But I still love it here!! LOL

1. Being known as a transplant...some of the natives REALLY don't like us and have
bumper stickers to prove it!
2. Traffic is awful, especially in Mt Pleasant
3. I agree about the bad drivers...lots of accidents everyday
3. Cost of living to me has been a huge increase since moving from, oh yes I'm gonna
say it, Ohio.
4. Schools are not good.
5. The sweet grass basket stands on Hwy 17 that look like they should be condemned.

I don't need the Sabretts, (by the way, he's at the corner of Bacon's Bridge & Dorchester) and I think the best 'boiled peanuts' are Timbo's on 61 in West Ashley.

OK, I figure all of ya are gonna think I'm nuts. But...a trick I learned from a friend of mine from El Salvador, Normally I boil about 5 lbs of peanuts at a time, this is just for personal consumption mind ya, peanuts, salt, water, and ... put in one Jalapeno, and the juice of one lime, you will be amazed how well that one pepper flavors 5 lbs of peanuts. No, it does not make them hot. But it really adds a good flavor.

Thank you, finally someone that gets it I am a transplant as well but in the last few years I have watched as the new developments are succeeding in turning Charleston into another could be anywhere USA. Developers leave it alone, or at least get some original ideas.

I guess I'm a nut -- I was thrilled to drive through Mount Pleasant and see these reminders of a tradition that has such history.

IM FROM NJ***
so im assuming a lot of people "locals" have issues with transplants? i guess people coming from other states i assume? What is the real issue with this? im coming from new jersey, and it seems like its just like how it is where i live. people in the southern new jersey are a little pissed at "shoobies" (thats what we call transplants i guess) that come and move into our towns and demand townhouses and condos everywhere, trying to make it even more expensive to live there and every summer it becomes more and more of a resort area. i think a lot of states have issued with outsiders moving in. new jersey is just a rough place to live, high cost of living, low page wages not to mention getting laid off in the winter due to no business if you live near the beaches, high car insurance, now they plan on raising tolls 50% more every year which is crazy. and trying to find a place to rent? if you can find a place thats $750 a month for a 1 bedroom 1 bath, that is basically a medium sized studio YOUR LUCKY.. i've found many places where i can get 800-1000 sq on that price in SC and my pay scale isn't lower really at all. im sure there are some cons about sc, but every state has it. but to some people from outside, sc cons do make up for the pros that are different then lets say NJ charges.

Unless you move to a really transient area - NYC, DC, SF - folks everywhere are always suspicious of newcomers. Some folks - locals and transplants alike - are never happy no matter what. It's best to just ignore them.
As far as your own experience, it is relative to what you know. I'm leaving the Tri-State area where I'm secure in an urban environment, and where I know I have family. We could stay here with our jobs that pay only a little more than SC. Building on top of my inlaw's house in Staten Is would cost as much as an older house on James Is, with a yard and parking! A townhouse on SI is out of our price range, even with combined incomes. Besides, both Chas & NY are just as close to the ocean, but in Chas I don't have to deal with NY-NJ traffic. For me it's a no-brainer.
