I spent six summers living in old Chucktown. For a while I worked at J.M.Fields Automotive near Charles Town Landing. Now the auto center was across the parking lot from the store, it's now a bank, and I was assistant manager so I wore a shirt and tie. I swear that when I had to walk over to the store my shirt would be ringing wet by the time I got there. I never noticed much difference between Charleston summers and south Florida. Of course Florida's heat and humidity lasts longer.
A couple hundred miles makes a lot of difference. I live in Spartanburg now which is 75 miles to the southwest of Charlotte so we have similar weather. Winters up here in the Piedmont are similar to Charleston since both areas are east of the mountains. I have lived here 7 years and Charleston for 6. Daytime highs in the winter are usually mid to upper 50s with some mid-60s; good for any outdoor activity in both places. The chief difference is snow. In my six winters in Chucktown I only saw snow a few times; one 3 inches, one 5 inches and one about an inch. So snow is kind of unusual in Charleston. In Charlotte, on the other hand, there are snowfalls throughout the winter. They are usually only a few inches, but being relatively close to the mountains and at a higher elevation are gone pretty quickly. Spring and Fall are about the same in both places. Summertime, yeah the good old summertime, lol Well Charleston is a horse of another color. It's hard to describe the heat and humidity. South Florida, New Orleans, maybe. People up here in the Charlotte area complain about how hot it gets. Yeah, it does get hot, mid and upper 90s, but it's not the same drenching heat and humidity of the Low Country that takes your breath away as soon as you step outside. I came to Charleston with the Air Force in the 60s and guys coming back from Vietnam said Charleston was good training ground for a tour in Nam. I guess that about says it all. Didn't mean to be this lengthy but I have to tell it like I see it.
