I had read where in California that a $100 dollar ticket is 'actually' about $400 to $500 after they 'tack' on fees. I'm actually a careful driver and I don't speed so I've never gotten a ticket before. But I was wondering if that sort of thing happens in Charleston or in South Carolina in general. What I read was that they use tickets as an alternative source of revenue.

So, if you have gotten a ticket what was it for and how much was the 'fine'? Thanks.

They aren't that much. Usually $200 or less for speeding. And usually, if you actually go to court, they will lower it (Haven't had a recent one).

And yes, the only reason for 99% of speeding tickets is revenue. I could never be a traffic cop, just ruining people's day for minor traffic violations. On my way to the myrtle beach airport yesterday, I passed at least 15 cops (coincidentally at the end of the month). Georgetown was a huge speed trap. Every time the speed limit went from 50 to 45/35 it seemed a cop was there waiting.

Get Waze. It won't show everything but it's typically pretty accurate about where someone is running radar.

I got a ticket while back (59 in a 45), but I went to court and they reduced it to me taking the TEP (traffic education program) and four hours community service. It actually ended up costing me more than paying the ticket but by going this route the ticket disappeared from my record, so no points or insurance premium increase.

I wish they'd integrate it with Google Maps, or at least make it so when I say "OK Google, Navigate to ..." it does it with Waze instead of Google Maps.
