I wish I could afford a nice home in Mount Pleasant because it looks so pretty! I found this thread to be very interesting, since I read all the time about the stinking rich and snobby people where I live, and it's just not true. Yes, there are multi-millionaires, but I don't know if they're snobby, since they don't invite me to their parties!

Regarding the real estate agent, she sounds like a miserable person. I am always amazed & amused when someone has an experience with one person and then blames an entire city. My neighbor worked for a boss of a certain (religion/race/nationality) and one day she used hateful slurs to describe how awful "all those people" are. I guess she never realized I was one of them too. LOL

Well justNancy, I said she was an example of one of several experiences there. I wasn't aware I had to list all of them to get my point across. LOL

Honestly people get over it!! I have seen this topic here many times.

I also moved here from South Florida. People are people and there are snobs and rich people in all parts of Summerville, West Ashely, James Island, Johns Island, IOP, Daniel Island, Downtown Charleston, etc.

It's not an epidemic in Mount Pleasant or anywhere. You meet people and you choose who you want to associate with. I have moved around my whole life so I learned a long time ago.... There are good and bad people everywhere.

Amen to that!
People living in every subdivision, community around Charleston have their own personal reasons why they want to live where they do (ranging from wanting good school district to having a Charleston zip code) and their level of satisfaction can range from it's a nice place to outright snobbery. So what! I have met wonderful, kind and considerate people from all areas of the Charleston greater area (including Mount Pleasant).
Find an area and/or subdivision that makes you feel comfortable, you will probably find that you will fit right in.

I like James Island much better than Mt. P, and I have lived in both areas as well as downtown. James Island tends to be a bit of a younger area and there are some great new neighborhoods back off Maybank as well as off Harbor View near the Fort Johnson area - and it is a much quicker ride into downtown. Mt. P is ok - but unless you work over there, there is really no reason to live there. It is hard to get around there and you can get a lot more for your money on James Island. If you want to be on that side of the Cooper you should consider looking into Daniel Island over Mt. P.

I find the comparison between Mt. Pleasant and James Island of interest. Certainly the feel of James Island and Mt. Pleasant are completely different. The comment about there is no reason to live in Mt. Pleasant unless you work there and the comment about one getting a lot more for their dollar/money on James Island than Mt. Pleasant is certainly arguable. Using one objective criteria such as average price per square foot of a home selling in the past year on James Island as opposed to Mt. Pleasant we see that in single family homes selling between $200,000 and $300,000 on James Island that the average per square foot price was $163.50 per mls stats. Average price per square foot in Mt. Pleasant in this price range was $164.13. In the $300,000 to $400,000 range James Island came in at $169.43 while Mt. Pleasant was lower at $167.31. The homes that sold in these price ranges were generally older on James Island than in Mt. Pleasant. Both Mt. Pleasant and James Island are closer in to Charleston than many other Charleston area communities such as Summerville. Location is a large factor in establishing what someone is willing to pay for a home. I would suspect that most Mt. Pleasant residents do not work in the town, so there are a large percentage of Mt. Pleasant residents who feel that that there are certainly many other reasons that work location to purchase a home in the town. Daniel Island certainly is a good option for those who want to live east of the Cooper. However, you certainly can get more home for your money in Mt. Pleasant than on Daniel Island and there are certainly more things to do in Mt. Pleasant compared to Daniel Island. With regards to being "hard to get around", most everything in Mt. Pleasant, regardless of where you live is generally within a 5-15 minute drive, certainly in my eyes "not hard to get around."

What the difference between a "Big Snob" and a little Snob ? As luvnthebeach appears to live in Mt. Pleasant, apparently the advantages of the town such as the schools and close proximity to the beach offset the disadvantage of living among "very big snobs."

The ONLY good thing about Mt Pleasant in my opinion IS the schools. Although with the overcrowding they're getting questionable also. One high school is not big enough for this area. Mt Pleasant is great if you're rich but if you are middle class it's difficult. Also, Mt Pleasant has it's share of shady places too. It seems like your choices are to live in a way overpriced house in a development that won't let you sneeze without their permission or a not so nice area. We are actually moving from this area b/c of things like this.

And one last thing USCJoe traffic IS AWFUL in Mt Pleasant. With 17 being the main route to pretty much everything is a problem. Not to mention the fact that there are daily accidents that make the matter worse!

Mt. Pleasant is experiencing overcrowding of schools, but this is the case in all of the areas of Charleston that are experiencing rapid growth. Having moved to the town of Mt. Pleasant in 1988 as a non-supervisory federal employee without a working wife, I certainly would not have characterized myself as "rich" in the normal sense of the word. Nor would I characterize most of my clients who I have represented in the purchase of a home in Mt. Pleasant as being rich. Most of the young families with school age children were looking for highly rated schools and were willing to economize in certain areas of their lives in order to offset the higher cost homes in Mt. Pleasant. I assume that you are referring to low income communities as "shady places." Mt. Pleasant does have low income communities as does almost every town in the Charleston area. At the same time, Mt. Pleasant enjoys a relatively low crime rate compared to many nearby Charleston area communities.I have lived in Mt. Pleasant since 1988 and do not feel that I live in an overpriced home. Maybe more expensive than for a similar sized home in Summerville, but a bargain compared to what I would pay for a home downtown, on the Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island. At the same time, I have not encountered any unreasonable restrictions placed on me by our home owners association. I would be interested in what unreasonable restrictions your home owners association has placed on the enjoyment of home ownership in your subdivision. Traffic has increased in Mt. Pleasant but not just because of the increase in population of the town but also because so many non Mt. Pleasant residents travel to the town for it's shopping, restaurants and amenities. One only needs to look at the increased traffic congestion of other Charleston area communities to realize that the town of Mt. Pleasant is not unique in that regards. I also don't think that traffic accidents in Mt. Pleasant contribute any more or less to travel difficulties than those in other areas. I wish luvnthebeach the best of luck in finding an area with excellent schools, good shopping, inexpensive housing, good medical facilities, low crime rate and minimal traffic. When you find such an area please let me and the other forum members know of the utopia you have found.
