Yikes, just saw on the news that just in Charleston County, not counting Berkeley or Dorchester counties, that in 2007 there was 23 suicides. Just in this month alone there has already been 5. That is terrible!
I've been wondering about this as well. My sister lives in Charleston County, and within the past several months she's mentioned that two teenagers/young adults that her kids knew, and my niece's assistant principal have all taken their own lives.
This surprised me, particularly with the emphasis on religion and the sense of community in the area. In my unfriendly & Godless town, I would expect to see more dispair. But I've never known anyone who has done this.
It's incredibly sad and disturbing. Are there any plans to create depression awareness programs?
SCdreamer, many suicides occur because of religion when teenagers and young adults realize they do not fit the mold of what their religion tells them they are "supposed" to be.
The United Way had a meeting last night which is why it was brought up on the news. I did hear on the national news that from now until the end of Jan. suicides increase because people are getting their credit card bills and so forth in the mail. It's really sad that some people think this is their only way out.
Whatever the reason, it is horrible when a person decides to take their own life.
