I may be wrong, but I got the impression Berkeley is to provide all EMS services, so if the on-island "bus" is out, the back-up is another Berkeley unit, which could be pretty far away and is what happened in this instance.

Is the annexation a dead deal for good? I can't understand why residents of DI wouldn't want lower property taxes and consolidated emergency services.
As I mentioned earlier ... it was a schools ( plural ) issue that inflated the secession balloon and once that was solved... the balloon deflated. The walkable current lower and middle schools would stay on the island ... and a new High School would be built. The concern wasn't taxes for most .. but maintaining property values on the island was. Since a majority of folks living on the island are families with kids in school ...schools were the driving issue as well as their impact on property values. A vote also was needed on the island with a two thirds majority voting for ...and it became clear that once the school issues were solved... it became obvious that there wasn't enuf support for secession.

Since the vote wasn't held and therefore the petition wasn't filed with the state... the issue can be brought up again at any time.
