My husbands in the IT industry and I'm a scientist part-time...mom full-time and a half. I didn't see much there for us to do. Looks beautiful though! Thanks!

We'd like to find a historic home that's affordable. We would also like to be close to conveniences but not be in area with a strip mall on every corner. We were thinking of the Summerville although we're not set totally on Charleston. We're considering North Carolina and Georgia as well. I work as a scientist part-time but I love history and would love a job where I could talk about it all day long. Any ideas?
Historic homes can be quite expensive, especially in downtown Charleston, downtown Summerville or Old Mt Pleasant (I don't know your definition of "affordable" ).

There are some "southern-style" new communities where you can buy "affordable" homes with charming historic looks (i.e. Charleston singles with balconies, etc.) One example is I'On community in Mt Pleasant. I know it's not the same, but many people prefer this because they can get the style they want without the headaches of maintaining a very old home.

McClellanville doesn't just have the feel of a small town, it is one ;-) Rich in history and natural beauty, low in crime, development, and traffic.

I LOVE McClellanville! Weren't some scenes of "Paradise" shot there? McClellanville is truly a small, quaint, friendly, and very charming village.

I would say about 25 minutes, given the amount of traffic on 17 in Mt. Pleasant. If you go, be sure to go all the way to the end to the water where the shrimp boats are docked...at sunset you can't beat the view. There is a wonderful little diner in town too...can't remember the name, but it's worth stopping and eating at just for the atmosphere (and food of course!). Daniel could tell you more about it than me...and he has some great photos on the link he provided.

Places like Rockville and McClellanville are what the true flavor of the Lowcountry are all about!

Smile If Charleston ever gets into your blood...

After reading your post & your description of what you were looking for, I couldn't help but wonder, "How can I, a total stranger, tell them in a nice way, that Charleston is what they are looking for?"

I moved to Charleston in 1989 and lived for three years...

(Corporate world forced me to transfer for a "potentially" better position)

..and made one of the worst decisions of my life by chaseing the Corporate dream for 3-4 more years, all the time living in places that I hated, and thinking about Charleston.

(It was like a high school sweetheart that you never forget)

I "Escaped" the place that I was unhappily living and returned to Charleston.

For thousands of people like me, Charleston is "HOME" even though we were not born here.

It could be "Home" for you, too.

Good luck on your quest.

It will take you at least an hour and probably a good bit more time to get from McClellanville, SC to downtown Charleston

McClellanville is a very nice quaint town. I am there everyday b/c of my work. They are getting ready to start filming a movie with Kevin Costner in mid Feb...can't wait! Depending on traffic, it would probably take you about 35-45 minutes to get there from downtown. There is a nice little neighborhood hidden by trees that I absolutely love. It's right outside of the village with a few houses for sale, pretty reasonably priced. Definitely worth checking out.
