You have to accept SC is a warm weather climate and with such comes different wildlife including snakes and in parts of SC, alligators. I had more issues in the low country with the no-see-ums then snakes or gators.

That's really interesting. We have 1/2 a dozen bird feeders and no critters...well, except squirrels.
We have a huge bird feeder right off our front porch, and it hasn't attracted anything more than birds, except those scrawny tailed squirrels.

Agreed. It just comes with the territory. I don't know the statistics, but I'd be willing to bet you and your dog have more of a chance of being in a car accident than being bitten by a snake.

A little caution is good; being so afraid of your environment that you can't move is not. Just sayin'.

18 years living in the south east...12 of them with a black lab -- not one snake sighting. Well one garden snake about 17 years ago.

Out here in the West you can have your dog enroll in snake avoidance training. Its easier here as all we have are rattlesnakes.

I highly doubt one of you saw a copperhead-they are very fat squat snakes and it is not common for them to climb trees. The various rat snakes on the other hand are great climbers. Learn a thing or two and they are neat animals-but it does require you to get just a little closer to see them!

We have one of these guys in our garden. Actually not a snake, but rather a "legless lizard." Ridiculous! But beautiful and harmless.

Have only seen garden snakes in my yard. They move out quick with the lawn mower approaching. Only freaky moment was when I cut back a shrub and found a 3 foot long snakeskin shed right there among the branches. Yeah, I don't like thinking about it much
