Smile Thinking about moving to Summerville from Missouri

Hi,
I just wanted some advice about moving to Summerville, SC. We originally moved from Fresno, Ca about 10 years ago to Springfield, Mo. We didn't want to raise our 2 children in California. Both my husband and I were born and raised in California. We moved to Missouri for a slower pace life style, but it's starting to pick up speed quickly.
We love Missouri and both of our families relocated here shortly after we did.
We now are thinking about moving to South Carolina, the Summerville area (we have friends that live there).
Are the schools great with special needs children? My son is autistic.
Cost of living???
What is the average rent for a 3-4 bd 2 ba home?
Are jobs easily attainable? (Diesel mechanic/store manager/supervisor in this field)
My husband's salary here is $45,000.00. Is that size income sufficient to live in Summerville? I have been a stay at home Mom for a couple of years now to take care of my son, but have an education in Early childhood.
We are pretty down to earth people and have both lived in cities and in the country. We prefer to live in the country.
If you live in Summerville, please let me know how you like it and if you can help answer some of the questions I've asked..we would be greatly appreciative. Thank you in advance
Lisa

As far as special needs is concerned there is the Coastal centre which has programs for special needs. Their number is 843-873-5750. If they do not have any beneficial programs I am sure they can point you in the correct direction.
Also some people complain that the wages are lower here. Look into that as well as housing before you make any concrete decisions that affect your standard of living.
Also if you want to live out in the country there is some rural living on Hwy 17 towards Walterboro and beyond the Ridgeville area off Interstate 26.

I love Summerville. As far as the job situation, with the Port of Charleston, there are a lot of local and over the road trucking, marine diesel for the ships that come in and also a Cummins Deisel plant. Probably good job availability, but I have no clue as to the wages. Homes will rent anywhere from $1000-1500.00. As for Autism, check out this site, C A R O L I N A**** A U T I S M.

I too am looking for a more rural area and this sounds interesting. Is this still in the DII district? If not, how are the schools. I'd like a quiet area with a good size yard and not in a subdivision. Don't get me wrong, I like commuity but not right on top of me. Would ultimately like to find a large older home. Maybe even a farmhouse? I've looked at Awendaw but it's just too close to the coast for my comfort. Is Monck's Corner as far out as it appears on the map?

Parts of the area NS Highlander indicated are still located within the Dorchester 2 School District...It is Dorchester and Berkeley county in those areas, you just have to watch the line. I have a map of the counties on site if this would help you.
Personally, I do find Moncks Corner a bit "out there." However, there are some very nice and reasonably priced homes that would fit the bill you are describing.
