Lifestyle varies from family to family. We earn more than most of family and friends but live more frugal and are debt free except for a $250k mortgage that we are paying a bunch extra on each month. I've known families who earn more and yet say they are broke due to excess debt and extravagant lifestyle choices.
You can live well on 90k if you live within a budget that everyone respects, even in Charleston. Where are you moving from?

Thank you. We'll be moving from NH........ton more expensive here.
I agree with 1lisat unless you have tons of money. I live in Ladson off of Ladson Rd and it's between Summerville and North Charleston. We tend to forget that we are in Charleston County because we butt Dorchester County. Only a road difference.
Mt. Pleasant is just way too expensive for me but it is very pretty over there.

While not a financial advice chat, many would say that depending on your mortgage interest rate it could be wiser to invest that extra money rather than pay down the mortgage.
I agree that a lot of it depends on personal preference and how you live. We too live pretty simple but are not debt-free (thanks, mortgage and student loans). I feel like you can live very comfortably on that income here if you live modestly, kind of like johngolf described below.
To me, Summerville seems like the best bang for your buck if you can handle the commute during peak times. The schools are great, recreation is great, the town is really growing with new businesses, and cost of living is a bit cheaper there. Seems like everything from gas to drinks at the bar are cheaper in the north area.
We are originally from Maine. We moved to SC 11 years ago but the Charleston area 4 years ago. I'm not sure when you moved to NH but there probably has been a lot of growth since you've moved away. We were so set on Summerville but we found a place in Goose Creek that we loved so we scooped it up. We have 3 kids and couldn't be happier with our kids' schools. There is so much I love about Summerville...like the small historic village.
I miss many things about New England but I do love the Carolinas. I think you'll do fine on your income.
All I ask of anyone new and moving here to a subdivision in Summerville... Please enjoy the real town of Summerville, slowly cruise the old streets to appreciate its history, and patronize its local businesses downtown.
