I think a lot of people would agree road improvements need to be made, but not a $750,000,000 boondoggle.
I agree $750m is a lot of money for 10 miles of highway, but to be fair, it wouldn't have cost this much if it weren't for the constant 22 year long political and legal delays. And inflation.
The flooding on main road (not st) is not hard to fix compared to building 526. They could throw a steel military bridge in there in a day and it would be fixed and would not cost hundreds of millions.
If only they would do something. This is the last time I will be going through this, I am moving off Johns Island soon if nothing changes. I was sitting on the Stono Bridge last night at 830 pm, it was backed up the whole bridge to James Island.
I'm serious about that military bridge as a stop gap. That would bandaid aid it immediately until they throw more dirt down and raise the 1/4 mile up a few feet. I don't know why they make things so hard.

Legal/safety reason. You can't just slap a military bridge on a major road in a situation such as this.
They would have fixed Main Rd. years ago and widened Maybank Hwy if not for the constant fixation on building 526.
The powers-that-be deliberately torture people on Johns Island to build up support. I can't believe people put up with them.
The opposite is just as true, the CCL gets pissed off anytime someone talks about cutting down some trees, and fixing Main Road would leave quite the impact. It's also not as simple as saying I want to fix this road so lets do it. Fixing Main Road is even more of an undertaking than adding a lane to Bacons bridge road in Summerville. That road faced heavy delays due to rain, Main road would face even more delays and it's a much more important road for those on the island than Bacons bridge was for Summerville. Building I-526 would have avoided many of those types of delays and would only have to worry about the CCL wanting an impact assessment for every pylon.
My time frame is 6 months to see if something is done on Johns Island or I'm rollin out to Carolina Bay in West Ashley. If nothing is done on Maybank or Main Rd, I am gone from the Barrier Island....
I hope you get a flyover at 17 and Main. And widening at Maybank.
Elliot Summey, during his apology tour, said that it would take 7 years to get the permits for 526. Construction would take at least 3 years. This is the optimistic timeline, the crazy optimistic timeline.
They should have fixed Main Rd. and Maybank Hwy. years ago. The money for Maybank has been there for 10 years (from the last half-cent sales tax). This liar Summey and his allies have been torturing you for years and using you as pawns. Sad.
