Search craigslist. You may luck into finding a small one bedroom for that. As others have mentioned, you may want to visit and look around. A roommate would make things much easier. Either way, I would look for downtown, or close to downtown west ashley. Would not look too far out into WE, JI, or Mt P. Forget about the Summerville comment above unless you don't want to be "in" Charleston.

Many people who post here list things that are mutually exclusive $1000 a month, walkability, and no roommate are going to be tough. I guess you need to quantify which are the most important for you.

Be aware that a lot of the fantastic deals on CL are scams. There's one now... $900 for a 3 bdrm/2ba house in Seaside Plantation on James Island. The reality of that listing is that it's on the MLS for $2000. Someone clipped one of the listing pictures and some text and put it out there as bait hoping to get money, personal info or whatever. It happens a lot.

Having lived in the Central Square apartments -- no you won't be isolated living in an apt. complex in Mt. Pleasant. The pool area on a Saturday is like a 20 something club med. BUT all the comments regarding rent rates are spot on. My son is 20 something and living with us to save up some money. It's expensive on the peninsula -- rooms go for almost a $1000 a month...crazy stuff.

West Ashley would have a lot of complexes that would be around $1,000, but that would be just for the rent (1 bedroom), not including utilities, etc. Living here can be pretty pricey especially if you want to be near a beach. You pay to play in Charleston .

You can definitely find 1-2 bdrms in West Ashley for $1k or less if you aren't too picky. It would be a long haul to the beach by bike though. James Isl would be closer and rents are similar... $1k can get you a 1bdrm in a decent complex or 2 bdrm in an older complex that won't have as many amenities. You might be able to ferret out a place in Mt Pleasant that's decent and bikeable to the beach too but they're rarer. No pets helps. I'd start contacting the property managers that you find online.

The whole Shem Creek bar/restaurant scene is a 10-12 minute bike ride on back roads from Paces Watch. Also 10 minutes gets you to the foot of the Ravenel. If you have a car you can be downtown in, yep you guessed it, 10 minutes or less.

You'd be nuts to overlook that place for $900/month. I lived there for about 6 months when we first moved here in 2012 and it was a great location because it's so central. Not affiliated with them at all. Just had a good experience there.
