Hampton Park?
How safe is Hampton Park, really? What's the neighborhood like? How far away are the "bad" areas?

Hampton Park is a nice area. I know several people that live there and feel comfortable. It is close to "bad" areas.

Hampton Park is among the nicest in the area. I live blocks away from it and have no qualms whatsoever about having my wife and puppy go out to jog, exercise, etc.
You should be responsible and cautious wherever you go, but on the Charleston peninsula, you aren't going to find many places ranking higher than Hampton Park.

Hampton Park is adjacent to the Citadel campus on the northwest side of Charleston. The Park is what is left of Charleston's 'World Fair' around the turn of the century, and is mostly stately oaks, grounds and lakes. The safety of the area waxes and wanes, but I do not recall of a major crime there in quite a while. Still, I personally would not walk the area after dark. For more specifics contact Charlestons Recreation Department.
As a 9 year old, I use to walk to the Park across 10 blocks of the city without a care in the world. Is there any town where a child could do that today?
There is a lot of neighborhood crime in the city, mostly drug and gang related. But sometimes it spills over to the areas around the College of Charleston and even the Battery, an area steeped in history that fronts Charleston Harbor. But it pales in comparison to some other cities.
There are several crime statistic web site that give comparitive info by zip code, but I know if no better thing to do when moving into an area than to subscibe to the local newspaper for perhaps six months before doing so.

Hampton Park is pretty decent in the daytime
if you want a clue about it's nightlife go look under those trees, but be careful not to step on the broken beer/wine bottles or the hyper needles
it's within sight of some really seedy areas
back in the 60's we lived across the street from it, I used to love feeding the goldfish and the seagulls with the crackerjacks I bought at the little candy store that was there... they had a small zoo and everything there back then, with a three legged bear and a cpl gators etc...
it's a small park, only one pond in the middle but it's a pretty neat looking place... I got married at that gazebo back in the mid 80's, had so many fantastic memories as a kid in that park
it's still a nice place, I just wouldn't hang around it after the sun falls...
