Waterfront Apartments in Charleston
I'm planning on moving to Charleston later on this year. Is it realistic to find a decent apartment in a safe neighborhood on our near the water for under $1500/month?
I have tried searching the apartment rental sites with no luck. I'm going to visit Charleston in the next couple of months here to check it out and would like to know which complexes are worth considering.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, that is possible. The water might be the Ashley River, but it won't be the ocean. There are a number of places may work for you.
Try Seagate Village, Peregrine Point, Mariners Cove, Little Oak Villas & Headquarters to start.
Also, what about renting a single family home? A Realtor can help you out with that.

Guess I should have specified--I meant on or near (within walking distance) the ocean. I don't want to rent a home because of the upkeep.
Thank you!

Jim,
I googled the places you mentioned and the ones I could find are condos.
Perhaps I should elaborate more:
I am from Novi, MI (just outside Detroit) and want to move south. I have lived in the Detroit area my entire life. To be sure that I could adjust to Charleston, I want to rent an apartment for a year before making any long term commitments.
I definitely want to live somewhere that is close to the ocean. Do you think I should look into other areas of SC, or are there options for me near Charleston? Charleston sounds amazing, so hopefully the latter is true!

Try Mariner's Cay at Folly Beach. It's less than 2 miles to the beach (an easy bike ride) and most condos have waterviews. There are a few units currently renting for under $1200 or so per month.
As far as purely rental apartment complexes on/near the beach, I don't know of any.

Mariner's Cay might be a good option. You can see an aerial view of the complex and it's relation to the beach at the following link:

Mariners Cove, Mariners Cay & Little Oak Island (my favorite) are close to the beach.
They are condos, but they are rentals. No real difference as far as the tenant is concerned.
Are you coming alone? Splitting rent? Considering a roommate?

Thank you everyone!
The locations of all 3 places look great--very close to the ocean and still close to Charleston. How is traffic from there to downtown? I noticed that they are all off of a marsh--do you think there would be a bug problem?
I'm moving with my boyfriend. He's asking for a transfer to Harleyville for his job but I am trying to get him to find a new one in Charleston. I have a Marketing degree but currently work as a CAD system sales person... there are a lot of job opportunities for me in Charleston.
We are not going to be moving until the fall but will be visiting in March. I will definitely be stopping by Folly Beach to see these condos!
Do you know of a good site to search for condo rentals?

Does he like long commutes? According to Google, from Folly Beach to Harleyville is about 56 miles one way.

There is still a three or four bedroom house on Pitt St in Mount Pleasant that is a block from the harbor and the rent was recently reduced to just $1395 from $1500 but, although I have not seen the inside and have only driven by it, I suspect the inside may be musty and appliances and fixtures dated.
You should check out the rental listings on the Prudential Real Estate website. They have the most comprehensive website of any I've seen. I used it to find my place on my own that I'm renting for $1650+ steps away from the ICW (after my realtor began to ignore me when I needed her most and absolutely HAD to find a place.... even though she knew that I would eventually be looking to buy). There are lots of rentals of condos and townhouses as well as single family homes listed there. With the info you get there and cross referencing with Walk Score - Helping homebuyers, renters, and real estate agents find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods. and mapquest.com you can see exactly where it is, how close to the water it is etc. I flew down and looked at a few rentals the agent showed me which weren't satisfactory and then when I stopped hearing from her, I just found the place where I am now using the internet and contacting the listing contact directly.
Hopefully you won't have to do it all yourself but if you do, it is doable.
