My husband and I are looking to relocated to the Charleston area from CT. The cost of housing and taxes are crazy up here along with the long winters. I am an RN and my husband works as an auto parts manager. We have no children and are 45 and 49. We are thinking about spending about 180k on a house. Does anyone have any insight or advice on the job market and realestate? Like what area is good in that price range. We are looking to be within 30 min of Charleston. I want to be sure this will be a good moving choice for us. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

If it is just the two of you, and you don't like the cold, and are willing to live in a a condo, you could be happy here. 30 minutes to Charleston (not in traffic) is possible.

$180k is not a high number for a single family detached house in Charleston generally but there are some possibilities. How big a house and would a townhouse/condo do? How about a fixer-upper?

There is a strong medical community here but there may also be strong competition for the jobs. Pay rate in this area is probably less than you're used to.

I would look towards the summerville goosecreek area. You can find a good bit of house for that price or cheaper in those areas. If you husband wants to do the same thing he is doing now he shouldnt have a problem finding a job doing the same.

We were probably not looking directly in Charleston but in a suburb. Goose Creek seems like a nice area from what I have read and compared to CT on what 180 to 200 will buy you the houses look really nice. It sounds like North Charleston is not a really safe place. Is this the case? I would love to be closer to the water but the prices go up a lot.

Goose Creek might fit your needs though it's not so close to the beach. Depending on where in Goose Creek, you might make it to Sullivans Island in 30 min or less when there's no traffic. With the industrial development happening up that way, a smart buy there should make a decent investment too.
