All – I am always curious about ‘screen’ names so I thought I would start a thread focusing on US…This seems like a happy-go-lucky group of members and visitors alike…Some screen names are obvious of course - but if you have a unique name (and there’s lots of them) pls explain the meaning? And if anyone would care to share some info about yourself like, real names, hobbies where you hailed from, what brought you here, etc, etc, etc…
For all I know I may have ran you off the road, flipped you off, took all your money in a poker game or cut in front of you @ the grocery store? I think this will be a cool thread and break some of the tention from ‘other posts’… No obligation, ha!... So here goes: The name pokrplr is short for ummm well Poker Player, which is long for real name Bob…I am orig from NY, have spent some time on Cape Cod MA, Danbury CT, Flint MI (yak), Charlotte NC, Myrtle Beach and here! How I arrived in the South is unique, I was ready for a change of pace/life so I literally threw a dart at a map, Myrtle was the winner… Hobbies include the obvious card playing and Ice Hockey. I’ve been skating since I was 3yrs old…36 years later, still skating! That gives the secret of my age away now… Poker was a hobby I inherited from my Dad, watched him play in some big games (back home) then I caught the bug...No Limit hold'em is game of choice but do play others on occasion...Play online 7 days a week and usually get into two lives games a week... Well anyhow, that's a good start...Who's next??? |

NS Highlander means Nova Scotia Highlander.
Nova Scotia is latin for New Scotland and when the highland clearances occurred, Nova Scotia is where the highlanders were sent. The Canadian army is based on the British tradition and it's regiments have distinct insignia and in some cases uniforms. I served in a reserve army regiment known as the "Nova Scotia Highlanders" and we wore kilts. Their motto in Gaelic means "a breed of fearless men". Highland regiments have a different culture where craziness and ferocity is encouraged on the battlefield. The word retreat does not exist in the Highland soldiers mentality. So much so that the Germans in WW1 were terrified of this as they nicknamed the Highland Soldiers "The Ladies From Hell". They didn't know what to think the first time they saw a group of armed and rabid grown men wearing dresses running towards them with bagpipe music in the background. On occasion I wear my own kilt at special events and the best part of it is all the ladies are dying to know if underwear lies underneath.... ![]() |

This is fun
My SN doesn't have very much significance or tell anything about me really - Fisher was one of my childhood dogs and three is my favorite number. I didn't put much thought into my SN when I registered because I honestly didn't know I would become such a fan of the forums! I wish I had put a little more thought into the name, but I think it's ok. I just hope people don't think I'm a 33 year old fisherman...haha! I was raised in the upstate, near Clemson and went to Clemson. Met my husband there when he was about to graduate and he moved to Charleston to start dental school. I drove back and forth, back and forth for two years (you know I mention that as much as I can to him, right?!) to visit him. I did most of the driving b/c my school schedule was more flexible. After I graduated, we got married here in Charleston and we now live on James Island. We are moving in May/ June for Dallas where he will do a one year general dentistry residency (I've found the Dallas forum very friendly!) and after that we're heading back home to the upstate. I think I will miss Charleston, but I am ready for a change. My parents have a house in Mt. P and I have been coming to Charleston on the weekends since I was 12...so I kind of feel like I'm from Charleston and the upstate. I'm sure I will still visit all the time, but my true love is the upstate. The lake, mountains, waterfalls, so pretty! But I love them both and am so happy to call SC home...we do have a great state. I don't know what I'm going to do in Dallas for a year!!! haha. Great thread idea! |

So do you chase Hurricane's??? If so, I DO TOO! One year I even made the news and we tied ourselves to the boat dock in Georgetown during I think hurricane Bertha? I know it was a "B" storm...

When we lived in NY we lived along the bayfront (really Reynolds Channel but called the bay by the locals) and we loved it. We moved to SC almost two years ago & we have really happy with the move. Like most people who relocated from the NE we came to escape the cold weather, taxes and congestion. Our neighbors have been excellent and we have been quite fortunate to make good friends. The kids have adjusted pretty well, too, which was a major concern for us.

Great idea Pokrplr...
SCDweller is pretty straightforward as well. I dwell in SC, was born and raised and Summerville and after college and traveling a bit, brought my wife and four kids back to the area to grow up in Summerville as well. I love the area and really love helping people get acclimated and love it as much as my family and I do. |

EmilyBH stands for (ummmm...you guessed it).
Guess it is time to change my profile as I have finally left the "City by the Sea" (Newport, RI) but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe it is due to this new relaxed laid -back lifestyle I'm now enjoying in Charleston, SC. ![]() |
