The "situation" was mentioned because it related to the question about sex offenders and my point was to prove that these things just aren't happening in Summerville or Charleston like people are being so blindly into believing that they are. Arrests are not made everyday around here of sex offenders. The story and this original post just happened to coincide at the same time so it was used as an example to prove a point. Oh and I didn't find it "surprising" that this arrest was made there, nothing surprises me anymore.

As far as your post not being "disparagingly" you need to reread #4 again, because it sure came across as belittling to me of not only Summerville, but also other areas of Charleston. Of course I am speaking strictly for myself and it is of my opinion only. I will no longer see any of your posts as I am adding you to my ignore list and as far as I am concerned this disagreement is resolved.

Do you mind if my wife and I look you up if you're still selling real estate in the Charleston area 3-4yrs from now. I like realtors who are honest about the areas the live around and crime is everywhere. I don't think your posts have been disparaging of anyone place. From the looks of the real estate market there my wife and I would be looking at the Summerville area because our budget as school teacher and social worker can only afford us a house as high as the 170's at most. Schools are important as well because we have one toddler and another due this month that will be nearing or at school age by the time we move down there.
And about sex offenders you can find them anywhere, and the montgomery county sheriffs dept here in Dayton Oh sends me automatic updates when sex offenders move within a specified radius of our home. Do the police departments down there offer such a service that you know of.

Thanks Chris

Yeah I'm just gonna skip to the earthquakes....

Yes SC has plenty of earthquakes. They are most noticeable in the Sand Hills region. Growing up near Aiken, often times while wondering in the woods you might find a sandblow, and sometimes you hear what sounds like a big truck going by outside, but there is none there. Most SC quakes are heard only, and very rarely do you feel any vibrations from them. A massive earthquake hit Charleston in 1867 I believe it was..completely destroyed pretty much the entire city.

Honestly, I don't think these newer homes are actually built to withstand quakes (the builders want cheap, easy to build homes). A lot of suburban homes are tacked together very quickly, and often times have defects later. Hopefully, there won't be any more large quakes to test that theory, but there is always that possibility.

I am also a social worker who is planning to move to Charleston or Myrtle Beach. May I ask, what field are you in, and have you been successful in researching the job market in Charleston? I am psychiatric social worker, and am looking into finding some agencies but am having a bit of a hard time. Even the NASW South Carolina chapter couldn't provide much info.

The Charleston Earthquake of 1886

The seismic history of the southeastern United States is dominated by the 1886 earthquake that occurred in the Coastal Plain near Charleston, South Carolina. It was one of the largest historic earthquakes in eastern North America, and by far the largest earthquake in the southeastern United States. A major shock, occurred August 31, 1886 at approximately 9:50 p.m. and lasted less than one minute, but resulted in about sixty deaths and extensive damage to the city of Charleston. Because the event took place before seismological instrumentation, estimates of its location and size must come from observations of the damage and effects caused by the earthquake. Most of what we know of the even and the resulting damage comes from a comprehensive report by C.E. Dutton of the U.S. Geological Survey published in 1889. The meizoseismal area (area of maximum damage) of the 1886 earthquake is an elliptical area roughly 20 by 30 miles trending northeast between Charleston and Jedburg and including Summerville and roughly centered at Middleton Place.
The 1886 earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks. Of 435 or more earthquakes reported to have taken place in South Carolina between 1754 and 1975, more than 300 were aftershocks that occurred in the first 35 years following 1886. The 1886 earthquake and its aftershocks dominate the seismic record of the southeast. The historic record suggest the Charleston-Summerville area had a continuum of low level seimicity prior to 1886, and a low-level activity continues in the same area today.

pvjd: Actually my wife is the one finishing her masters in chemical dependency counseling. I'm working on the last year and a half of my b.a then starting my masters program in middle childhood education. And to be honest we're looking at areas of interest first then it's where I finally get a teaching job as to were we'll finally settledown. I'm truely hoping it's in the Charlestown area. My wife seems to think she'll be able to find a job almost anywhere, but I'm inclined to do more reach for her as well.

CWilloughby78,
I appreciate the kind words. I expect to still be in business 3-4 years from now, as I and I am sure others Realtors on this forum love what we do and the service we can provide to families and individuals considering or moving to the Charleston area. We have neighborhoods and communities throughout the Charleston area that should appeal to everyones tastes and pocketbooks. The decrease in property taxes in the state and the wide selection of homes in the area make Charleston even more affordable and attractive to many who live in higher cost of living areas.

Default Regarding earthquakes in Charleston and Summerville

Also, what's the scoop on the likelihood of a big earthquake. I was surprised when I found out SC even has earthquakes. CA gets all the attention for that! Are houses and buildings built to withstand earthquakes in SC?
Google major earthquake in Charleston in 1800's and see what you get. I used to live in Summerville and was laying in bed early one AM and felt a rumble, sort of how the ground can vibrate if a huge truck goes by. It turned out to be an earthquake. Now I live in the Columbia area. I have a 9 yr. old golden retriever. One day for no reason we could figure out, she had a terrible anxiety attack. Contrary to anything she'd ever done before, she would jump on top of the furniture (at 98 lbs.), whimper and shake. Then, jump down, hide in the closet. Panting like crazy went on for about 2 hrs. Then, hide behind doors. Later on the evening news, we learned that Summerville had an earthquake that day, and that's the only thing we can attribute to her actions.

We used to live in the Ashborough East subdivision, and from a special that I recently saw on the weather channel about the Charleston earthquake in the 1800's, the rock enclosed wall called the "magazine" at Dorchester Park is the location of the epicenter for quakes, and it was less than 1/4th of a mile from my house. I actually used to take my first golden retriever to the magazine and throw balls for him to fetch, and let him run inside the walls. WE ALWAYS MADE SURE WE HAD QUAKE INSURANCE on our house.

Just because you discuss it doesn't mean you're "giving it power." And by the way, pedophiles are not able to be rehabilitated. As for earthquakes, just get insurance on the house and then forget about it.
