I can't verify this, but the resident crotchety (& very opinionated guy) from NY on another forum raves about Fratello's I'On.

I was just going to add Fratello's -- and we're former NYers too.

OMG. La Farfelle on Beaufain is incredible. It's fairly new. I almost hate to recommend it for fear it will be overrun, though it's plenty big. I ate there three times in as many weeks. It's pretty upscale, so it's for a special Italian night out. Careful not to run up the bill too high--pricey wine list. But the food is to die for. Take it out for a test run it during Restaurant Week.

We are former North Jersey people living in Mount Pleasant. Here are our favorites. Nothing fancy,
but our go to places. Try Joey's Tomatoes on Coleman, open for breakfast and lunch. They get their bread right from NY. You can buy a loaf to take home, just make sure to heat it first. Best bread we have ever eaten! They have a wonderful chicken cutlet sandwich, as well as other varied items on the menu.
We like LaPizzeria, also on Coleman, for lasagna and other pasta dishes. Their tomatoes, etc come directly from Italy.
We always enjoy going to Grimaldi's in Towne Center for their brick oven pizza, salads and cheesecake. Great management and servers. Makes you feel like family. We sit at the high top tables near the bar. On warmer days/evenings, the front windows open to catch the breeze.
We were thrilled to find these places so close to home!

Pan e Vino always gets rave reviews from people who like real Italian. My favorite is still Al de La. Its in West Ashley on Magnolia right across from Triangle. It reminds me of my grandmothers cooking which was more Northern Italian.

Mondo's is also good as an all purpose choice.

I still need to try Trattoria Lucca- the people I know who eat there love it.

Wild Olive It's off the beaten track on John's Island (which is about 25-30 min from downtown) but is always packed. That says something when there is really nothing around you yet you are consistently booked up. Service has always been fantastic. There was one instance where my dad was complaining a bit about where we were sitting to us (mind you he was just talking to us not any of the staff). They overheard and the manager personally came to us and moved us to a different table. I haven't even gotten started on the food. I actually can't say enough but I will say I will not go to another Italian restaurant while I'm in this city. They've all been honestly disappointing. Google it. The high ratings aren't exaggerating in the least bit.
