I am going to be retiring this year & relocating in 2019 after my husband retires. I need some advice on nice areas & lower price house communities. For somebody that doesn't know anything about South Carolina what do u recommend I do? I don't know anything about the area. Don't know if I want Conway,Longs or Murrell's Inlet near Myrtle Beach or Summerville,Goose Creek, Monck's Corner & North Charleston area. I need some help on what to do. I don't want to spend more than $250,000. 30-45 minutes to the beach, no flood zone. Any reputable builders? Don't know if we can afford a newly built house or have to get a used one.
Well, since you have about 2 years to decide, I recommend lots of scouting trips to all the areas you mentioned. Stay in the area, drive through the neighborhoods, go shopping, get gas, eat out--live like a local for a weekend. Look in your price range on a realty site like realtor.com and drive by those properties. Read, read, and read some more on city-data, [domain blocked due to spam], local newspapers. Talk to people working in stores or restaurants about the area. You will know where you fit if you do the research!
Yes, prices can change a lot in 2 years but right now you can find that close in to Charleston and close to the beaches on James Island, Johns Island, West Ashley... it depends on how big a house you're looking for and how big a lot. I just helped clients buy a brand new house on Johns Island. 1600 sqft on a third acre for $233,000. I had others buy a 1925 sqft townhouse with a marsh view for $235,000 (this one needed 5-10 thousand $ worth of updating).
As others have said, if you can visit, it would help your decision-making out quite a bit.
