I'm not sure about the coast but as I said in 17 years in the upstate it's the first I've seen. Don't fret too much about them. Just have your place sprayed several times a year and you'll be fine. They're gross but keep the Suave hairspray handy ;-)

I don't think buying new construction comes with any guarantees that you won't have roaches. In fact when buldozers clear areas and upset nests of bugs, many of them fight back and come back to the same spot where the new building was built and just make their home inside. I know in Texas Scorpions do this. I stayed in a brand new timeshare resort and found a scorpion on the kitchen floor. At least the roaches done bite.

not just SC...all over south of the Mason Dixon line..... NC, SC, TN, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, and probably TX.

I've lived in 5 of these states and visited friends in MS, AL and LA and we all laugh about the steroid roaches....its part of the south....

I've lived in Atlanta area for 10 years and have never seen a palmetto bug. Use to live in Bermuda and did see quite a few.

When we first moved to Atlanta area, I found one dead scorpion in our family room. They aren't the real poisonous ones but it was a scorpion. I called pest control immediately and had them treat inside and out. I saw one or two dead ones in the garage during the next five years but have never seen them since.

I will be making sure that the first week I'm in my new home (whereever it is) in the Charleston area I will call pest control.

*snicker* Those creatures are just nasty! I don't care how clean you keep your home and yard, they are still bound to creep in from time to time.

The best product that I've found that really works is Bengal gel. You can find it at the hardware store. It's almost like peanut butter and the bugs carry it back to the nest. My grandma had them last year after heavy rain and used this product. In two weeks her critters were gone.

It is my understanding that SC gun laws are fairly relaxed. What about a 12 gauge surprise? Seriously I've got a baseball bat from when I was a kid and a pair of size 13's that I've fit nicely in my mouth several times that should do the job when we move. Lou
