Better start checking the forecast in different areas.
Some of the best places to view in the US will be under cloud cover. Including Kentucky.
To be fair the past week and a half has had about 50-60% chance of rain every day. Realistically a small chunk of the area will have some rain at some point in the day but most of the metro will likely be rain free..... clouds are another matter but even then it should be mostly clear.
The challenge is going to be shade before the event and bathrooms. Anything else i can handle.
IOP will be a mob scene I think. Where is the next Rest area north on I-26?
I along with my wife and kids (3 year and 2 year old) are planning to drive (2 hours south) to Charleston to view solar eclipse.
Please advise a right place in Charleston to view this solar eclipse event safely for a memorable experience.
A day in Charleston can be fun, but . . .
Don't go so far. Head down US-17. My guess is people in the area will stay home and along the road will be better. There is no way to predict crowd size and traffic. Stopping along the way at a park or rest area is my plan, don't tell anyone, okay?
I checked out campgrounds around I-95 and they are jammed. Rumor has it the Interstate rest areas will be closed. Downtown Charleston will be crowded, but all you need is a little shade and bathrooms, right?

Even if it gets cloudy you'll still see the dark. Look to the North-West to see the shadow approaching at 1700 MPH.
I'm driving down to Charleston tomorrow AM for the weekend but not for the eclipse. It is going to be crazy busy driving down to Chas and around town this weekend. I can't imagine the preparations and work the hotels and restaurants (for starters) will be dealing with over the next 4-5 days.

Agreed. 72 hours out will start to paint the best picture.
A lot of places directly in the path have iffy weather.
Hey locals -- fill your gas tanks. Prediction all those people will be gassing up before heading home.....
