I rarely go to Bilo anymore. Produce isn't up to par and prices have really increased. I find myself mostly going to Harris Teeter and loading up on coupons of if no coupons, I'll stop by Walmart.
When I lived in Greenville, I worked at Bilo headquarters for a couple of years. I remember those offices closing in Mauldin and Winn Dixie headquarters moving to FL.
Boy that's going to create more ugly vacant strip malls when they start closing them up. It's unlikely those larger spaces will be filled easily by another store.
GroceryGuy,
Someone told me yesterday that the Publix at the top of Harborview Rd on James Island was expected to close when the new store at Folly Rd and Grimble opens. Do you know if that's true? I thought I'd like the new Publix opening on James Isl, but not so much if the one near me closes and it creates an "ugly vacant strip mall" space as gliderguy so aptly put it.
I already can't conceive how James Isl supports as many grocery stores as it has now.

I have no information, but that sounds like fake news. The existing Publix is almost 3 miles away from the new one, so they are different trade areas. Publix has never closed a store in Charleston, that I am aware of.

I used to think that too, but the stores have figured out that people shop at what is close to them. As soon as there are 5,000-10,000 people living in a certain radius, you'll see a grocery store.
I believe if they could get the permits, Walmart would build neighborhood markets on James Island, John's Island and the peninsula.
