Try to live as close to work as reasonable. Just look at google maps with traffic turned on. As of 5 PM on Friday, the metro area is a hot mess of traffic, RED and Orange everywhere. Commute times are double or triple when traffic gets bad. Pay the extra to live close to work and save time and money on travel.

What area of Mount Pleasant? It can take 30 minutes to get from one end to the other during rush hour traffic. If your spouse works, where would they be commuting to?
You'll get more home for your $1500 outside of Mount Pleasant. It's nice but simply much more expensive than Summerville, West Ashley or Hanahan. There are some rentals in the Clemants Ferry Road area that fit your budget. We rented a condo the first year and it was convenient being centrally located.

Wow, that's a tough decision! It depends on how good the job advancement is, how flexible and adventurous you are as a family, options if it doesn't work out, etc but if you're asking if it's do-able, the answer is yes. You can find a 3bdrm townhouse/condo in Mt P for $1500 that's reasonably safe though your short timeline is going to make it more difficult. Minicoop's suggestion of Wando East Townhouses is a good one. If you can wheedle a little help with rent out of your employer, that would be good.

Be aware that you'll be coming here right at the beginning of the hottest months of the year so the first 2-3 months might seem miserable outdoors unless you're in the water. Kayaking somewhat replaces hiking here in my mind (in the summer at least).

Living close to work is a suggestion not to be taken lightly, but if both work and home are in Mt P, your commute shouldn't be too bad. A lot depends on your commuting hours too.

The first year might be tough but if you're a family that can look at it as an adventure/challenge, it could even be a bonding experience.
