"But yeah, 17 and alt 17 are the way to go. Just as wide as 95 with a fraction of the traffic."
"Another option, take Exit 53 (Walterboro) and follow that to Route 17A. When I'm coming up 95 from GA, I usually check traffic - if 95 is clear between Exit 33 and 53, I take 17A. If 95 has any slowdowns between those exits, I take 17."
Do I understand you both, correctly? Are you saying that, 17 and 17A will get us to Summerville as quickly as on I 95? Are you going to historic Summerville or, the newer area off of 526?
Thanks again, folks, for your suggestions.
What I'm saying is when you're coming up 95, get off at exit 33 and take US17 on into Charleston. When you get into Charleston you can take 526 to 26 up to Summerville. If you do this you spend the least amount of time on 95, and you avoid the rural portions of 26 completely.
I've done this drive often and it's much easier than taking 95 and 26 the whole way. There's no trucks, less traffic, less trees, and what feels like more room. I try to avoid 95 as much as I can and I'm not fan of 26 either.
Google says you can go from 95 to US17 to SC state road 165 into Summerville, but personally I would avoid this as it's a isolated 2-lane backroad. Just taking US17 into Charleston is the best and less stressful option imo.
Dspguy's route is valid too, but you'll be on 95 for another 20 miles and you'll have to deal with 2 lane backroads, but it is a little quicker than my route, so it depends on what you want, speed or lanes.

Husband takes 165 down to our house all the time when he has a job that finishes up in Summerville for the day. It's actually a really nice road (a lot of it was redone not too long ago), no traffic, and very, very fast to get to Summerville from 17.
Interstate 95 needs to be widened to three lanes in each direction. The South Carolina Department of Transportation will need to get itself together in prioritizing needs and managing its budget.

All the things we need in this state? I would put 95 as super low on the priority list personally. Frankly, I would be happy if they finally dedicated some funds and attention to the lowcountry in general given the way we're growing so fast. Upstate has TONS of roads and even more important, alternate routes, unlike down here.

NC does not have 3 lanes so why does SC need 3? I-95 in NC also seems to be busier than the SC portion. Spend the money completing and widening 526!
That’s the problem. Florida should pay for it. It’s just a conduit to funnel Canadians and Northerners to Disney and South Florida retirement homes. SC gets nothing out of it.
