We are planning to move from the northeast to the Goose Creek area. Can anyone tell me what support is provided for students on the autism spectrum at the high school level. My child currently is in a substantially separate program, receiving ABA services, speech, OT, Social skills group, and community service training.
I cant speak for the high school level, but my child has been here in Berkeley County for 3 years in elementary. Middle school next year. We came from Michigan and the programs were much better. There is an Academy in Mt Pleasant, North Charleston area, but it is private and expensive. The school system groups all kids with needs together in a class. There is no County funded programs, and services dont exist. The teachers are fantastic, but they get no help from the system. The whole Autism thing is new to this state. There are non-profits focusing on the younger generation which is a start. Contact the special ed coordinator to get placement for your child. You will have to speak and fight for your child. Check Berkeley County website for coordinator name and number. We are here in Berkeley County ourselves.
