Hi all, I’m visiting Charleston next week to tour apartment complexes and I’d like to eat dinner at moderately priced restaurants that are NOT besieged by tourists. I want to eat like a local. I’m aware of places like Husk, but too many tourists eat there. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!
Depends on your fancy really. Here's a few of my favs:
Mount Pleasant; Graze, Guadalajara, La Pizzeria
West Ashley: Ko Cha Korean, Ms. Rose's, Angle Oak Restaurant
North Charleston: Bonefish Grill
James Island: Edison James Island, Barberito's, and I like Crust for a good pizza.
The Pickled Palate
411 Hibben Street
Mt. Pleasant SC
I've eaten there with my vegan son and non-vegan husband a few times. It's very homey, comfortable, and welcoming. This is from their menu on their website:
Vegan, lettuce tomato, cucumber, onions, arugula, sprouts, sunflower seeds, pickles and vegenaise on 9 grain bread.
Art's Bar on Coleman - local 'dive' bar with great only local shrimp/fish, and a burger that can stand up to anyone's, and oysters by the bucket when in season.
By 'local' you mean someone from Ohio that's lived here more than 10 years?
I would much rather eat in West Ashley or North Charleston than Shem Creek. But it sounds like you're looking for the Shem Creek atmosphere so just embrace it and enjoy. There is no secret local shrimp boat dock with awesome cheap food.
