so you can see the rates for various sections of Charleston, not just the entire city. I just checked my zip code here vs my old zip code where I moved from and the violent crime and property crime rates are almost identical -- both double the national average.

In 29464 in Mt. Pleasant it is the same as the national average
In 29465 in M.P. it is almost double the national average about the same as Northern James Island and also 29466 is higher than 29464 but a little less than 29465.

It never ceases to amaze me how the close in Mount Pleasant section has such a low crime rate. You'd think property crime would be high. Maybe it is due to the lack of any low income neighborhoods nearby.

Rophlmao is on a distinguished road
The new FBI uniform crime report is out (direct FBI link below, not to a competing site) and things haven't changed much.

The key isn't the STATE rate, it's the SPECIFIC rate in the area you actually live or work in. Crime in SC is statistically high, but your odds of being a victim are greatly influenced by the neighborhood you live in. There are many very low crime areas that make this a great state to live in.

Folks who believe this are called "zip coders" by Criminologists.
It's a valid argument, assuming that any two cohorts (statistically) never (or hadly ever) leave their specific zip codes.

I would note that even the "safe" area of Mt Pleasant is just as crime-prone as is typical for the nation as a whole.

There are undoubtably behaviors one can do to limit the chances of being a crime victim. However, the background rate does increase the overall probability, although models are not consistent in giving a precise prediction.

At least any stastical model of which I'm aware.
