I record Jimmy Kimmel along with many other shows on my Comcast DVR every night and I always skip over the commercials but while skipping over some last night I was watching them fly by and something caught my eye. There just seemed to be a ton of them.

This was at the end of Jimmy Kimmel's show and right before the last segment. So I went back and counted how many commercials there were just between segments right before the end of the show. I asked my wife to guess and she said nine. It was 28. I was really stunned.

For one break between segments they blasted 28 commercials at me. Some of them were only five seconds long many of them 15 seconds long but it was just insane to me how many different messages were being blasted at me in a very short period of time.

It seems to me that the brain would be unable to handle so many different completely unrelated messages in such a short time frame. Anyways just thought I'd mention it see if anybody else has any insights into the effectiveness or ability for humans to process this.

It even got me thinking about how I write on the internet and how I use small paragraphs to get messages across because if it's just one huge paragraph nobody's going to read it and it's very hard to digest.

+1
I've never owned a TV.

Edit: I take that back. I have one around here somewhere that a tenant left behind. It's small and I'm not sure where I put it...

I noticed this same thing when I got back from over seas for five years. It's just ridiculous, even if I look at them I never really pay that much attention.

The shows that I like, I usually tape to avoid the commercials. So those one hour shows are really only about 40 minutes long.

Can the brain even process so much information to make an ad effective. I'm guessing no.

Sure it can. You just hear the product name over and over and it lodges in your brain like grease in a drain line. You don't have to be aware of it, but pour enough in there and it will slow down and clog up just the same.
