Default Parking Insensitvity at Folly Beach

In April my wife received a tickety for parking in a lot and not paying the fee. Actually she did pay the fee but put it in the wrong box. Now the rest of the story.
First it is impossible to get anyone that works for the city to admit they have any responsibilty for the parking. Also, trying to just get a phone number for any city official is like pulling teeth. Of course they always forward your call to a voice mail and never return your call. Finally I was able to talk to someone from Palmetto Parking, they evidently run the parking for the city) but my pleas fell on deaf ears. Basically, they said pay or we will charge you more. He was kind enough to extend the time another week to allow me to pay the minimum $20. In the end I paid the fine in May (within the time period allowed). Well, today I received a letter stating I had not paid the fine and now it was $30. I do have a copy of the cancelled check. Obviously, this city will do anything to get as much out of you as possible. If their wish is to not have people come to their city, they have convinced me. I will never go there again and will tell everyone I see to stay away from Folly Beach. All I can say is during the next hurricane, don't expect to evacuate to my town. You are not welcome!

Parking enforcement is news to me. Just look how illegally parked cars block all sight view (State Hwy Dept requires open sight view!) when trying to get onto Center Street from the west side. Take a look at the blocked intersection where 2nd St West meets West Ashley. And parking at a fire hydrant is nothing new. I don't know of anyone getting a ticket or being required to move their car in these instances and they occur every day. How about the shrubs and plants that are on street rights of way that block view of oncoming traffic. Folly calls their operation a "Public Safety Department". They wouldn't know safety if it slapped them in the face.

If you live in Charleston county, I highly recommend getting a gold pass for $54 which gives you FREE access to all the Charleston County Parks (including Free Parking). That means you can park in the boat ramp parking lot on Center Street at Folly Beach and you are still pretty close walking distance to the beach and all the restaurants. That is where I park now.

I thought I was going to just not go there after I got my ticket but Folly Beach is too nice to boycott due to one unjust parking ticket. However if there is a law about "no tires on the asphalt" I think they ought to put it in writing and make it known on visible signage.

Boatwright brought this ridiculous tax to folly beach, folly used to be the only true "local beach" with free parking anywhere and any direction you wanted... dogs could run free and beer was everywhere... brick by brick they take away and charge us for what was once free, removing our rights ever so slowly...
