I'm thinking of moving there or close by. I could really use the Air Force Base facilities and the VA since I am a retired veteran but I'm concerned about the hurricanes, earth quakes, fires. I have children. Where would be a good place to move in or near Charleston. I don't care to be flooded out of our house or have a house destroyed. We are in an old mobile home in Spokane, WA 300 miles from the west coast right now and I want to come back east where I belong, but I don't want to go back to Ohio or Michigan w/the harsh winters. Any suggestions? I have a 9 yr old and a 17 yr old too.

you would love Summerville and John/james island. Have we had hurricanes in the past? Yes! Will we in the future? Sure! But we have been around for 300 years and we keep on keeping on! Earthquakes, not hardly! flooding, some just like in most areas around water.

But you will find that is awesome here in the Lowcountry--lots to do as a retiree, living is slow and easy, quiet and simple.

Summerville,Goose Creek and Moncks Corner are good reasonable options. Mount Pleasant is a little more pricey but nice.

Lived in N. Charleston, the air base, and West Ashley for 14 years. Mt. Pleasant is nice, but expensive. Built a house in Village Green in West Ashley early on. Great location out near the plantations. Renting it out now, but will probably sell this year when I retire from the USAF. BTW, I was there for hurricane Hugo in '89. I think we get more flooding from rain in downtown Chas. Everything cleans up and that's why we have insurance.
