Ya'll need to quit worrying about snakes and bugs. My gosh, we can't pave everything! Snakes eat mice and rats and other things that you probably wouldn't want around. Same goes for Gecko's and spiders.
There hasn't been a snake eat a human in SC for at least 100 years. Okay, I exaggerate. More like 50 years.

Exactly! So far I've only seen about 5 or 6 snakes in the wild. Two of them were seen while walking in the forest.

I find snake skins in my landscaping every now and then. Always freaks me out and I start looking around. As long as they are the good snakes I don't mind though. They are a benefit and are needed to keep things in check.

All snakes are good snakes as long as they stay outside....
If they get inside then they gotta go.....

Well then, figures it would be me to see one not in the wild...
On our visit this past week we were looking at houses in Hamlin Plantation, I'm showing my husband this house I saw on-line, we pull up to it, I open my door to get out.....well, what would you know....there lies a huge (IMO) snake curled up on the sidewalk.
I practically pulled a 'Luke Duke' jumping through the window to get back in the car!!!!! My poor husband was saying "What?! What's the matter???" thinking I saw something that could....like...., well, actually hurt me....
Hey, I know I'm being ridiculous, but I do not like snakes, and I don't even know why. That being said though, it would never change my mind about wanting to live there....way too many other positives outweigh it.
Where I live now in MD it is very rural; we have cows as our neighbors (seriously), and we have lots of snakes as well. However, they don't usually come into the subdivision area, so I don't need to worry about surprising one in my flower beds while gardening.

So...would one be foolish to lie out on your grass on a chair or blanket to catch some rays..and some zzzz's....or run across your lawn barefoot at night?....(yes I do)...or would that be in the realm of acceptable behavior?

i was thinking baout this the other day while clearingout some garden beds in my yard. i am wondering how comman snakes and such are in yards, not in parks or wooded areas. also... are they in trees too? or just on the ground? i was climbing a tree the other day to hand a swing, and was nervous of seeing something up there, lol.

Yes snakes do climb trees.
The snakes that live in the parks are seen less.

if you are worried just use some snake repellant
I have lived all my life in Summerville and I have seen some snakes - usually non poisonous but I have seen some copperheads and cottonmouths in the subdivision every 2 or three years or so. The best advise I can give is to go buy some snake repellent and spray your yard (just don't use mothballs - it can kill dogs, cats, squirrels or anything else that eats it). Lowes and Home Depot carry the stuff. Also I have the probem with black widows were I live so I also use Ortho Home Defence and spray around my house twice a year - also keeps the insects pretty much out of my house. Do this and you won't have to worry about poisonous snakes or spiders around you house.
