Tornadoes are not a huge problem in South Carolina. Tornadoes do occur from time to time, but most tornadoes that occur in South Carolina are small. They are rarely anything like the tornadoes you would see in the midwest or great plains. As far as hurricanes are concerned, the likelihood you would have tremendous effects from a hurricane in any particular area are not that great, especially if you don't live overly close to the beach or in a low-lying area.

Here is a good site to see how far inland the wind speed will be during different catagories of hurricanes.
High Wind Risk Areas

Here is a pic of the lake that is about 40 miles inland during Hurricane Gaston which was a Cat 1. Link to other weather pics.

Thanks for the links, I can see that coming from rural NY, I have some homework to do! I have no idea what water spouts, rotating clouds, etc. are.
Amazing how moving out of your area gives you such an opportunity to learn and explore. I can almost feel my brain expanding,lol
