I moved from coastal Rhode Island and used ABF which is a trucking company for freight, but they rent space on their trucks for people moving as well. Their website is www.upack.comYou (broken link) pay by the amount of space you use, not by weight. Their drivers bring a trailer or a relo-cube by, drop it off and pick it up after it is loaded and then deliver it to your new place. You can hire movers at both ends to load and unload (which I did) or try to save even more money and load it yourself if you dare. I liked moving this way because as compared to a full service mover who would have charged me over $5500 and I wasn't even going to be given a definite date when my stuff would arrive (they give you a range of a week span of time) since I wouldn't be using an entire truck (my stuff took up about 65% of an 18 wheeler). ABF came when they said they would -- even the day after a snowstorm ---and came back that night after movers I'd hired to load it had finished. When I arrived in Charleston days before Christmas, ABF was ready to bring the trailer by when I called. After the movers I'd arranged to unload the stuff here in Charleston, strung me along for a day or so, I hired someone else from the yellow pages who was prompt and professional and reasonably priced. Altogether, although everything took coordinating on my end, I thought it was a good way to move for about 40% less than a professional Mayflower Van Lines type mover was going to charge me.
