I've never been to Charleston and would like to visit for 2 nights during the week on July 1st and 2nd. I would like a recomendation on where to stay. We are traveling w/ young kids and safety is first, $200 a night would be max. Also, what would you do if had a 2 days? How crowded will the city be during the week?

I would say stick around the beach area. Perhaps one of the hotels in Mount Pleasant off the Isle of Palms connector. That would be a great jump off place for you. You can take the boat ride out to Fort Sumter: Charleston Boat tours | Tour Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC (http://www.fortsumtertours.com/sumter_overview.asp - broken link)

or the barrier Island tour:

I would recommend staying through the 4th at a beach hotel in Mount Pleasant. The Patriot's Point 4th of July is AWESOME! The fireworks off the aircraft carrier is FREE! 30,000 people were there when we went 3 years ago. the kids have lots to do. The husband will enjoy all the military museums, etc as will you. Yes it is a long day - but the best 4th of July for all of us. One note: Keep a close eye on the kids in the water. riptides were very prevalent and strong currents coming in from the southeast. Was dangerous.

We have a 16,12 3 and 1 year old and we love to watch the IOP beach fireworks on the beach. We do it every year. You can actually watch three sets (sullivans, Folly and IOP) of fireworks from the beach. The traffic is horrible... but expected.
Here are some hotel recommendations.

i'd say plan on the beach and anything with water. maybe a waterpark in one of the county parks. the children's museum and aquarium are air conditioned too
