Question Appliances in Charleston

My husband and I are moving to Charleston in July. He currently works for a family-owned appliance and electronics store in Lexington, Kentucky. He is interested in potentially continuing in this type of job. We have attempted to locate similar stores in your area but haven't found any. Are you familiar with anything like this? His current store is Pieratt's (Welcome to Pieratt's - Pieratt's) which is somewhat similar to HHGregg, Circuit City, or Best Buy. We've heard the job market isn't great in Charleston so we are really hopeful he can find something. He has a master's degree in psychology and has worked for a community mental health center but is more interested in pursuing a career in sales. He has been with Pieratt's for over two years. If there are no locally owned places like this, he is also going to try to find a job in some other type of sales (e.g., medical, pharmaceutical, steel, insurance) but recognizes these are a bit harder to break into. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

I'm actually not asking for unbiased advice. The best place to receive information is from individuals currently in the area. While it very well may be possible that there are people in this forum who only listen to the people on this boards, I imagine the vast majority of people use this as one of a multitude of resources to gain information. I can only speak for myself but I know that in addition to the information I can obtain from this board, I am also speaking with current residents at the job I will be starting, realtors, and people I know who have lived in the area, and my husband is asking people he works with if they have any leads. I believe it is best to use all of the resources you have at hand in order to make informed decisions.

As to your other question, I do have a job lined up. I am a graduate student and I will be beginning my residency at MUSC. My cart and horse are fully lined up, thank you. You may recall I was asking about a job for my husband. I certainly appreciate feedback from individuals on this board. I'm just not certain why anyone would even join an internet message board if he/she were just attempting to dissuade others from asking questions in the forums. It just doesn't seem all that productive to me but to each his/her own, I suppose.

Try looking up Wholesale Appliance Center in Charleston. They are locally owned and operated and might be similar to what your hubby is used to.

kytosc,

Not sure what's up with madbbqer but maybe the "mad" part of the name explains it. Anyway, keep posting questions because this is a great resource and almost everyone else who posts is helpful and nice. We're moving to the area hopefully over the summer so I know about as much as you probably. I have heard that jobs are ofetn posted on craigs list of all places so you could give that a shot. Also, the Post and Courier is online and there's always monster.com and other job search engines. I don't think they'll help much until you have an actual SC address. Good luck!

Thanks for the lead on Wholesale Appliance Center. One of the owners where he currently works also mentioned them. I have my fingers crossed that things work out and he can get a job fairly easily! Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.

kytosc,

I just moved here 2.5 weeks ago and was also worried about the "bad" Charleston job market. Now that I'm here I have found it to be just the opposite. In my short time here I have received 4 job offers.

My advice is to look into non-conventional job postings. One that proved to be the best for me was the College of Charleston Career Center. I asked the Career Center at my college to contact them to possibly allow me to view their online job postings. Their Career Center had no problem and gave me a username and password for login. Many of these positions weren't posted on careerbuilder or monster websites. In the past month I have noticed a few different sales jobs that your husband might be interested in.

Good luck with your search!!!
