I believe the Charleston/Boston similarity was originally due to the so-called "Triangular Trade Route" of the 18th and early 19th centuries which saw rum and iron products from New England go to Africa where it was exchanged for slaves who were then transported to the West Indies and Carolina ricelands where the slavers then picked up molasses (from the sugar plantations of The Islands) for Boston, where it was used to make rum and start the cycle over again. Boston was also a major receiver of cotton from Charleston's port pre-1861.

Barbados is another place closely tied to Charleston. Many a 2nd or 3rd son of planters who were effectively cut out of inheriting land by their older brothers took what money they had and left for "Carolana". Early Charleston writings ofter mention the Barbadans, who formed the original planter class.

I agree with Boston! believe it or not, we're from there and fell in love with Chas because the charm, character, history, waterfront, sailing, great restaurants, all reminded us of a "warmer" Boston close to the beach! it's awesome.
