Default safety in the south for a single mom from mn

I am wondering if anyone can give some guidance for a single mom of a little girl who has been thinking about a fresh start in the south. I have been researching Summerville, and surrounding areas, as I love the southern charm and lifestyle, and MN just isn't the kind of environment or climate I want to raise my daughter in. I am very concerned about finding a safe place for women/children, and worthy school systems. My daughter is still a preschooler, but won't be by the time this probably all falls into place. Crime rates are much higher from what I see (it's too cold even for criminals here!) and with just us girls, safety is so important. With one income running the show, practicality has to be part of the equation, too. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.....

Summerville's not bad IMO. Anywhere you decide to go down here is going to have its good areas and its bad just like anywhere in the USA now-a-days.
