Exclamation Charleston punk scene & local job market?

So, with Charleston on my short list of places I'm considering moving, I was just wondering about the two subjects in my title. As far as the jobs, mostly looking for local businesses since I already confirmed my suspicions that the corporate set isn't my thing.

As far as the music, well, I like it like my women: angry & loud.

How musically diverse is Charleston in general? Is there a little something for everyone there at least?

Hey Man,

I'm in the same boat as you, with the exception that I'm alrady here (since last Sunday, moved from Brooklyn, and I don't know ANYONE in Charleston).

I'll let you know as I find out.

Last night was my first attempt of "going out" in Charleston. I drove out to West Ashley for a underground community art show at Voodoo Tiki lounge. This did not turn out in my favor. Very indie-rock college crowd. Luckily I randomly ended up at a place on King entitled "The Black Cart" and met some REALLY great people there.

Tonight I'm trying the Mill. Some rockabilly night. Not really my thing either - but more parallel to my tastes.

Yes, I definatley have a gut feeling that there's some cool sh#t going on here. I think it's not always listed in the papers or posted online. I think you need to have an "in".

Have you tried Myspace for bands? Look up Action City Blackout or The Bullets. Again, not really my flavor (maybe yours), however - I'm getting closer.

What other cities are you looking into?

The local job market will depend on the industry you're considering.

Charleston has a pretty good music scene for a city its size, but it's not as diverse as larger cities. I would not say the punk scene is big here, but there is a market for music with a harder edge. There will occasionally be some punk music here, but the majority of it for this area tends to be at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. It's about 2 hours away and people frequently make the trip to see bands. I know a lot of people going to see Rancid there in a couple of weeks.

From what I have seen, Charleston is not a good place for "punks"
Strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

Hey thanks for the replies. The other places on my list are Eugene, OR, Santa Cruz, CA & Delray Beach Florida. I've been searching online for random info as best I could (since travelling to all these places isn't an option), but really my main priority is to get away from these NE winters so I'm keeping an open mind for other places as I continue my search. My main problem is finding the right place that can accomodate my "no car" lifestyle, vibrant music scene and at least one half-decent comic book store. :P

The punk music scene isn't in Charleston, I'll tell you that. In the year I lived there, Avail & The Draft came but that's about it. Oh, and Strike Anywhere.

Check out Cumberlands on King St. webpage to get an idea of what bands are playing in the near future.

I agree, it's one thing I like from being from the North!

If you are still looking for a place to move you might consider Nashville. Not a huge punk scene, but it is very active, very tight, and a lot of fun. We also have a great skinhead community here, mostly trads and sharps, and even though I'm not a skin they are more than happy to have me and my boyfriend around. Oh yeah, I'm gay, no gay punk scene here but that's mainly because we don't need one, all the skins, crust punks, bike punks, gay punks, and everybody else gets along so well no one has ever seen a reason to split things into little categories.

If you are looking into Eugene, it is a nice area and accessible for all types of music. I would also suggest Portland, it has a decent fairly young/angry punk scene, and at any time you may see a protest on street corners.

i used to be part of the underground punk scene when i was a kid in nyc over a decade ago. and i can say even though my lifestyle has changed drastically since growing up, and starting a family... i find myself holding true to the fact i still do not like authority or conformity years and years later. that being said, i am having a hard time with certain issues pretaining to that here in charleston. most people are very conservative and very old school thinking. people are alot more closed minded then i hoped for when finding out we were moving here. granted like everywhere, if you look, you will find like minded individuals. but honestly, as a whole...charleston may not be what you are hoping for.
