Bufo is a large genus of about 150 species of true toads in the amphibian family Bufonidae. Bufo is a Latin word for toad.
I did not study the toad when it happened I just picked it up and tossed it over the fence, so the photos are helpful but I am not sure any of them was the one. I did read about the so called "bufo" toad also known as the cane toad, giant toad and marine toad, it is very dangerous and could be in the area. It is not a native species but none the less it has been reported to kill some pets in Florida and could very well be here in SC.
My dog is very nosey and every chance she gets she finds something weird to put in her mouth. For now I have to follow her around every time she gets let out. No other symptoms have surfaced since licking the toad but I am still hoping for more input from locals.

Almost all toads of the family Bufonidae have two lumps on either side of the back of their head, called the parotoid glands. These glands contain a poison, which oozes out if the toad is stressed. Some, like the Cane Toad Bufo marinus, are more toxic than others. And when a dog licks (or gets it in it's mouth) this poison they could die within one hour.

No poisonous lizards in the state. They are all harmless. Be nice to them- they eat tons of bugs.

My dog licked one of those toads a few years ago. He foamed at the mouth for quite some time but he was fine afterwards. I also saw a turtle eat one of these toads. It burned his mouth for a while and he was pissed, but he recovered.

Mostly I would watch out for snakes. I have seen more than my fair share of water moccasins over the years (and I used to have a dog who would try and pick fights with them).
There is also a lot more wildlife around here than you may think and it is closer than you may think. I saw a family of wild hogs while riding my bike in Ladson 2 weeks ago and I know a guy who was hunting out in the Daniel Island/Cainhoy area and was forced to shoot and kill (for his own protection) a bobcat. There are some foxes but they are more active in cooler weather. Deer everywhere. If there is water I would be on the lookout for gators.

I'm in a neighborhood off Clements Ferry near where the bear was sighted... it was all the talk at the pool and the neighbors were all abuzz... coming from Colorado, we had to laugh.... I'd much rather have just one great big easy-to-see dangerous thing to be on the lookout for. Seems a better trade off than the thousands of (mostly small) dangerous spiders, snakes and reptiles that we live with every day... I don't go to bed at night worrying there might be a 200 lb black bear under the sheets, but I do check every time for any spiders that might be lurking there!

Did you see this in the Post & Courier last month? It's not DI, but close enough.
