Question Dangerous toads and other critters?

I am new to the area and am finding that there are a lot of new bugs, toads, and critters in the area. My dog actually is the one who finds them for me. This morning she licked a brown toad/frog? She ended up drooling and foaming at the mouth for 10 minutes after. Is there really poisonous toads in the area? What else do I need to watch out for?

I'm not sure about poisonous toads-if you're worried I can recommend a good veterinarian in Summerville.

Mostly I would watch out for snakes. I have seen more than my fair share of water moccasins over the years (and I used to have a dog who would try and pick fights with them).

There is also a lot more wildlife around here than you may think and it is closer than you may think. I saw a family of wild hogs while riding my bike in Ladson 2 weeks ago and I know a guy who was hunting out in the Daniel Island/Cainhoy area and was forced to shoot and kill (for his own protection) a bobcat. There are some foxes but they are more active in cooler weather. Deer everywhere. If there is water I would be on the lookout for gators.

Thanks for the response, I am in the Sumerville area. We are from Texas and are use to large bugs and rattle snakes, frogs and lizzards. However it is much more wooded here and wet, so I expect there are many more animals everywhere. Plus with all the rain we've had in the past week certain critters/creatures are showing themselves. Any more info about what to expect or look out for would be appreciated.

I don't know about here, but in Florida we had Bufo Toads. They can kill an animal. Their skin secretes a poison that affects the nervous system.

At least if you can identify what type of frog/toad it will give you a starting point to research...no??

I live in New York. My dog licked a toad the other day. . .one that I know is not poisonous and she foamed at the mouth for quite some time. I actually dumped some water in her mouth to try to get whatever oil it is it was secreating out of her mouth!!
I can understand your concern though. I am trying to move myself, 2 boys, a dog and 2 cats, I know I am going to see critters I have only had nightmares about!!!!

I had never seen a black widow spider till I moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. and I've now seen three too many. I saw several red fox, which I hate. I see and hear lots of frog/toads but I don't know anything about either/or. We supposedly have a alligator in our lake our home sits on. I saw something in the lake last night, husband did too, that looked like a couple of seals? Sounds crazy but that's exactly what they looked like.

I see Bufo toads on that site. If your animal gets one, rinse his mouth out vigorously, even use a garden hose. Then hurry to a vet.
