My wife, daughter, and I are considering a move to Charleston or Greenville from California. Though I think we would really enjoy the area, I am concerned that my children will be picked on because of their race (I'm asian and my wife is white). Also, we are planning on adopting children from Africa in the near future. Is this something that I should be worried about? Is South Carolina a bad choice for such an inter-racial family?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I particularly would like to hear from any any similarly situated residents.
Hepcat, I don't think you have anything to worry about. You may meet a few people who may ask silly questions, but I doubt you'll experience much, if any, out and out racism.
I don't think Charleston area racism will be much of a problem. There is a large black population here and the surrounding area, whether affluent or not. Greenville, however, from what I have seen may be a little more racist as a whole.
